Description

Valerian root oil, derived from the Valeriana officinalis plant, is a complex and aromatic essential oil. It is known for its calming, soothing, and anti-spasmodic therapeutic activities. The oil is composed of various constituents, including alkaloids, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), volatile oils (such as valerenic acid), formate, flavones, and terpenes. It is obtained by steam distillation of the dried root and is present in quantities of 0.5 to 2 percent depending on the plant variety and place of growth.

Chemical Properties:
Valerian root oil is a yellow-green to yellow-brown liquid with a strong, characteristic, penetrating odor. It becomes dark and viscous upon aging or exposure to air. The oil is soluble in alcohol, ether, chloroform, acetone, benzene, and carbon disulfide, and is combustible. The main component of the oil is bornyl acetate, along with other bornyl esters, terpene and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, and free isovaleric acid, which contributes to the oil's odor. Indian valerian oil, produced from the roots of Valeriana wallichii DC., has a musky, woody, balsamic, and earthy odor. Indian jatamansi oil is obtained from the Valerianaceae species Nardostachys grandiflora DC. Valerian oil is produced in limited quantities and is used in flavor and fragrance compositions only in very low dosages.
