Cecropin A is an antimicrobial peptide (AMP) originally identified in moths. It possesses potent antibacterial properties and has been extensively studied for its potential applications in various fields.

Uses

Used in Antimicrobial Applications:
Cecropin A is used as an antimicrobial peptide for its ability to combat bacterial infections. It has been tested for its cytotoxic effect on breast adenocarcinoma (MDA-MB-231) and human mesothelioma (M14K) cell lines, as well as in ultrasensitive radial diffusion assays against E. coli to evaluate the effects of Galleria mellonella protein 24 and apolipophorin III.
Used in Sensitivity Assays:
Cecropin A is utilized in sensitivity assays to determine its minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for various bacterial strains, such as Photorhabdus variants. This helps in understanding the effectiveness of cecropin A in inhibiting the growth of different bacteria and its potential use in treating infections caused by these bacteria.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Cecropin A interacts with cell membranes and makes it permeable for electrolytes. Cecropin A thus, favors cytolysis and finally cell death in the hepatocellular carcinoma and lymphoma. The synthetic cecropin A in transgenic rice confers protection against bacterial as well as fungal pathogens.
