Description
Eucalyptus maculata citriodora, ext., also known as lemon-scented gum, is an essential oil obtained by steam distillation of leaves and terminal branches of E. citriodora Hook. It is an almost colorless, pale yellow, or greenish-yellow liquid with a citronellal-like odor. The oil has a specific gravity (d2020) of 0.860-0.870, refractive index (n20D) of 1.4500-1.4560, and optical rotation (α20D) ranging from +1° to -3°. It contains a minimum of 70% carbonyl compounds calculated as citronellal and a minimum of 75% citronellal by gas chromatography. In addition to the main component, rac-citronellal, the oil also contains citronellol and isopulegol (5-10% each). Young E. citriodora trees, grown exclusively for essential oil production, are cut back to a height of 1-1.50m and develop into shrubs, allowing for year-round leaf harvesting. More than 200 kg of oil can be obtained per hectare, with worldwide production amounting to approximately 1000 t/yr. The main producers are China and Brazil, with smaller quantities coming from India, Vietnam, and Paraguay.
