81-14-1 Usage
Description
Musk ketone is a white to light yellow crystalline solid with a sweet, very persistent, and slightly animal musk odor. It is insoluble in water and is prepared by Friedel-Crafts acetylation of 1,3-dimethyl-5-tert-butylbenzene and nitration of the resulting 2,6-dimethyl-4-tert-butylacetophenone with nitric acid. It has not been reported to occur naturally.
Uses
Used in Fragrance Industry:
Musk ketone is used as a fragrance and fixative in after-shave lotions, perfumes, and other fragrance products. It helps to enhance and prolong the scent of these products.
Used in Perfumery:
Musk ketone is used as a fixative in blossom and fantasy compositions, providing a long-lasting and sweet scent to perfumes.
Preparation
Nitration of the corresponding benzene derivative (Bedoukian, 1967).
Air & Water Reactions
Insoluble in water.
Fire Hazard
Flash point data is not available for Musk ketone, however, Musk ketone is probably combustible.
Flammability and Explosibility
Notclassified
Purification Methods
Purify the ketone by recrystallisation from MeOH. It has a strong odour of musk and is used in perfumery. [Fuson et al. J Org Chem 12 587 1947, Beilstein 7 IV 808.]
Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 81-14-1 includes 5 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 2 digits, 8 and 1 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 1 and 4 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 81-14:
(4*8)+(3*1)+(2*1)+(1*4)=41
41 % 10 = 1
So 81-14-1 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
