Description

Levan is a polysaccharide produced by some microorganisms and plants, and is a non-typical biopolymer composed of fructose units linked by β-(2→6). It is an exopolysaccharide, synthesized outside the cell, and has moisturizing, anti-inflammatory properties, and helps improve skin barrier function.

Uses

Used in Cosmetics and Skincare Industry:
Levan is used as a moisturizing and anti-inflammatory agent for its ability to improve skin barrier function.
Used in Medical Applications:
Levan from Serratia Levanicum is used as an agent for prevention or remediation of dementia and as a compound containing the same.
Used in Scientific Research:
Levan from Erwinia herbicola has been used as a standard for the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy analysis of levan produced by Bacillus licheniformis NS032 in sugar beet molasses-based medium.
Used in Microbiology:
Levan serves as a polysaccharide substrate to test the ability of Prevotella copri isolates to grow when polysaccharides are provided as the sole carbon source in vitro.
Used in Enzyme Activity Assays:
Levan is utilized as a substrate in levanase activity assays to study the enzymatic breakdown of the polysaccharide.
