The radiationless transitions of isolated D2CO in rare gas and N2 hosts near 4.2 K have been investigated with tunable ultraviolet excitation. n—π* fluorescence occurs without an appreciable host-induced phosphorescence. A1A2 T3 blue-shift of 140 ± 20 cm−1 occurs in neon host, without an appreciable change in excited state or ground state geometry and vibrational frequencies. The D2CO fluorescence lifetime shortens by a factor of ten in solid neon, indicating that this “statistical limit” rate is not independent of environment. Complexes between D2CO and methanol do not luminesce.
