Specification

The IUPAC name of Acid Yellow 23 is trisodium 5-oxo-1-(4-sulfonatophenyl)-4-[(4-sulfonatophenyl)diazenyl]-4H-pyrazole-3-carboxylate. With the CAS registry number 1934-21-0, it is also named as 1H-Pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid, 4,5-dihydro-5-oxo-1-(4-sulfophenyl)-4-((4-sulfophenyl)azo)-, trisodium salt; Tartrazine. The product's categories are dyes and pigments; organics; analytical chemistry; food colors by food sanitation law in Japan. It is deep yellow powder which is soluble in water, glycerin and propylene glycol, slightly soluble in ethanol. In addition, this chemical is stable, hygroscopic and incompatible with strong oxidizing agents. it must be stored in a cool, dry place and keep container closed when not in use. Furthermore, Acid Yellow 23 is used as colorant for food, beverage, medicine, feed and cosmetic.

Preparation of Acid Yellow 23: It can be obtained by the condensation of two-hydroxy-tartaric acid and phenylhydrazine-p-sulfonic acid. Or coupling 1-(4'-sulfophenyl)-3-carboxy-5-pyrazolidone and sulfanilic acid which is diazotization, then salting with sodium chloride. Finally, we can get the product by purification.
