- High Oxidation State Binary Transition Metal Fluorides as Selective Fluorinating Agents
-
High oxidation state transition metal fluorides are selective fluorinating agents for dichloromethane, those with d0 electronic configurations undergo hydrogen-fluorine exchange and metal reduction, while dn species undergo chlorine-

- Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopic Studies on Manganese and Rhenium Oxide Fluorides in Low-temperature Matrices
-
Five high-oxidation-state metal oxide fluorides, MnO3F, ReO3F, ReO2F3, ReOF5 and ReOF4 have been isolated as molecular species in inert-gas matrices at low temperatures, and studied by IR and UV/VIS spectroscopy. In particular, the electronic spectra are described and the principal charge-transfer bands assigned using the optical electronegativity model. This suggested that a new value for χopt(F-) of 3.6 is appropriate for transition-metal oxide fluorides.

- Spectroscopic Studies on the Hexafluorides of Rhenium, Osmium, Iridium, and Platinum isolated in Low-temperature Matrices
-
The compounds ReF6, OsF6, IrF6, and PtF6 have been isolated as monomeric species in inert-gas matrices at low temperatures, and characterised by i.r. spectroscopy.Subsequent u.v.-visible studies reveal a complex pattern of electronic absorptions, and a detailed assignment of these in terms of charge transfer, d-d, and intra-configurational transitions is presented.

- Preparation of the Nitrenes ReF5(NF), ReF5(NCl), and ReF5(NBr). X-Ray Crystal Structures of ReF5(NF) and ReF5(NCl)
-
The action of Si(CH3)3(N3) on ReF6 leads to the nitride fluoride ReF4N in low yield together with a mixture which appears to contain ReF3N.Treatment of either of these materials with XeF2, ClF3, or BrF3 as appropriate gives the 'nitrenes' ReF5(NF), ReF5(NCl), and ReF5(NBr); other methods of preparing ReF5(NCl) and ReF5(NBr) are also described. From single-crystal measurements it has been shown that in ReF5(NF) and ReF5(NCl) the ReNF and ReNCl bonds respectively are nearly linear; the short N-F and N-Cl bond lengths are 1.257(13) and 1.56(2) Angstroem respectively.
