- How Large Can We Build a Cyclic Assembly? Impact of Ring Size on Chelate Cooperativity in Noncovalent Macrocyclizations
-
Self-assembled systems rely on intramolecular cooperative effects to control their growth and regulate their shape, thus yielding discrete, well-defined structures. However, as the size of the system increases, cooperative effects tend to dissipate. We analyze here this situation by studying a set of oligomers of different lengths capped with guanosine and cytidine nucleosides, which associate in cyclic tetramers by complementary Watson–Crick H-bonding interactions. As the monomer length increases, and thus the number of C(sp)–C(sp2) σ-bonds in the π-conjugated skeleton, the macrocycle stability decreases due to a notable reduction in effective molarity (EM), which has a clear entropic origin. We determined the relationship between EM or ΔS and the number of σ-bonds, which allowed us to predict the maximum monomer lengths at which cyclic species would still assemble quantitatively, or whether the cyclic species would not able to compete at all with linear oligomers over the whole concentration range.

- Nanostructured Micelle Nanotubes Self-Assembled from Dinucleobase Monomers in Water
-
Despite the central importance of aqueous amphiphile assemblies in science and industry, the size and shape of these nano-objects is often difficult to control with accuracy owing to the non-directional nature of the hydrophobic interactions that sustain them. Here, using a bioinspired strategy that consists of programming an amphiphile with shielded directional Watson–Crick hydrogen-bonding functions, its self-assembly in water was guided toward a novel family of chiral micelle nanotubes with partially filled lipophilic pores of about 2 nm in diameter. Moreover, these tailored nanotubes are successfully demonstrated to extract and host molecules that are complementary in size and chemical affinity.

The invention provides oligomeric phenylene ethynylene (OPE) compounds in formulas (I) and (II) shown in the specification as well as a preparation method and application thereof as photosensitizers in the photo-induced antibacterial process. An OPE molecule with length of about 2.8nm is synthesized by adopting the preparation method and the water solubility of the OPE compounds is increased by a method of introducing amino to the terminal. The OPE compounds have the advantages of simple synthetic routes, mild conditions, universal reagents and high yield, are suitable for amplification production and have good photo-induced antibacterial effects. The antibacterial experiments show that the OPE compounds in the formulas (I) and (II) have good photoactive antibacterial effects, can give play to the antibacterial activities when ultraviolet light and white light are used as light sources for illumination and have weak antibacterial effects without illumination.

- Synthesis of polyisoprene terpenoid dendrons and their applications in oligo(phenylene ethynylene)s as "shells"
-
The novel double-stage convergent synthesis of a new class of polyisoprene terpenoid (PIPTP) dendrons is described. PIPTP dendrons bear a highly branched aliphatic hydrocarbon skeleton and a hydrophilic hydroxy focal point functionality. These dendrons have the specific formula C (5×2G+1-5)H(5×2 G+2-8)O, and each dendritic layer is constructed from an isoprene unit. The key branching steps involve a double alkyl-metal addition to an ester functionality, followed by deoxygenation of the resulting tertiary alcohol by triethylsilane and trifluoroacetic acid, then hydrogenation or hydrogenolysis. The dendrons were also attached to oligo(phenylene ethynylene)s (OPEs) so as to function as protective shells to allow fine tuning of the nanoscopic environment around the OPE moiety, and to exert precise control of the packing density and intermolecular interaction between the OPE cores. Fluorescence quantum yield data reveal that the OPE core is better encapsulated by the PIPTP dendrons than by Frechet dendrons.

- Porous interpenetrated zirconium-organic frameworks (PIZOFs): A chemically versatile family of metal-organic frameworks
-
We present the synthesis and characterization of porous interpenetrated zirconium-organic frameworks (PIZOFs), a new family of metal-organic frameworks obtained from ZrCl4 and the rodlike dicarboxylic acids HO 2C[PE-P(R1,R2)-EP]CO2H that consist of alternating phenylene (P) and ethynylene (E) units. The substituents R 1,R2 were broadly varied (alkyl, Oalkyl, oligo(ethylene glycol)), including postsynthetically addressable substituents (amino, alkyne, furan). The PIZOF structure is highly tolerant towards the variation of R 1 and R2. This together with the modular synthesis of the diacids offers a facile tuning of the chemical environment within the pores. The PIZOF structure was solved from single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The PIZOFs are stable under ambient conditions. PIZOF-2, the PIZOF prepared from HO2C[PE-P(OMe,OMe)-EP]CO2H, served as a prototype to determine thermal stability and porosity. It is stable up to 325°C in air as determined by using thermogravimetry and powder X-ray diffraction. Argon sorption isotherms on PIZOF-2 revealed a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 1250 m2 g-1 and a total pore volume of 0.68 cm3 g-1. Copyright
