- Bimetallic Ni–Pd Synergism—Mixed Metal Catalysis of the Mizoroki-Heck Reaction and the Suzuki–Miyaura Coupling of Aryl Bromides
-
Abstract: A combination of Pd and Ni complexes activated aryl bromides for the thermal Mizoroki-Heck reaction and Suzuki coupling giving high yields in short reaction times. A thermal redox mechanism probably occurs whereby Ni complex transfers electron and reduces the Pd (II) to Pd (0) which then takes the reactants through the standard protocol of oxidative-addition, migratory insertion and reductive elimination, typical for the Mizoroki-Heck reaction and the Suzuki coupling. - Pd supported on clicked cellulose-modified magnetite-graphene oxide nanocomposite for C-C coupling reactions in deep eutectic solvent
-
Cellulose-modified magnetite-graphene oxide nanocomposite was prepared via click reaction and utilized for immobilization of palladium (Pd) nanoparticles without using additional reducing agent. The abundant OH groups of cellulose provided the uniform dispersion and high stability of Pd nanoparticles, while magnetite-graphene oxide as a supporting material offered high specific surface area and easy magnetic separation. The as-prepared nanocomposite served as a heterogeneous catalyst for the Heck and Sonogashira coupling reactions in various hydrophilic and hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as sustainable and environmentally benign reaction media. Among the fifteen DESs evaluated for coupling reactions, the hydrophilic DES composed of dimethyl ammonium chloride and glycerol exhibited the best results. Due to the low miscibility of catalyst and DES in organic solvents, the separated aqueous phase containing both of the catalyst and DES can be readily recovered by evaporating water and retrieved eight times with negligible loss of catalytic performance.

- Immobilizing palladium on melamine-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles: An efficient and reusable phosphine-free catalyst for Mizoroki–Heck reaction
-
A highly efficient and stable heterogeneous catalyst was successfully prepared by anchoring palladium(0) onto melamine-functionalized Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs-Mel-Pd). With the aid of amine functional groups, melamine was covalently bonded on epoxy functionalized magnetic nanoparticles and then Pd(0) was immobilized on this support with high dispersion. The prepared nanocatalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity for C-C cross coupling (Mizoroki–Heck) of various aryl halides (iodide, bromides, and chrlorides) with olefins under mild reaction condition in relatively short reaction times. The synthesized nanocatalyst was characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The loading level of Pd in MNPs-Mel-Pd catalyst was measured to be 1.26 × 10?3 mol g?1 by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). In addition, the catalyst can be easily separated and recovered from the reaction mixture by using an external magnet. The heterogeneity of the catalyst was confirmed by the hot filtration test, which was reused for at least six times under the optimized conditions without any significant loss of its activity.

- Transition-Metal-Free Matsuda-Heck Type Cross-Coupling and Mechanistic Evidence for a Radical Mechanism

The Matsuda-Heck reaction, usually performed with palladium catalysts, can be carried out under transition-metal-free conditions in the presence of a KOtBu/DMF couple. This system allows the selective and direct synthesis of stilbenes from aryldiazonium salts under mild temperature (20 °C). Mechanistic studies suggest a radical pathway in which the DMF acts as the initiator of the overall process.

- Green and sustainable palladium nanomagnetic catalyst stabilized by glucosamine-functionalized Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles for Suzuki and Heck reactions
-
A novel magnetic and heterogeneous palladium-based catalyst stabilized by glucosamine-functionalized magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticle was synthesized. The strategy relies on the covalently bonding of glucosamine to cyanuric chloride-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles followed by complexation with palladium. The structure of magnetic nanocatalyst was fully determined by FT-IR, XRD, DLS, FE-SEM, TEM, ICP, UV-Vis, TGA, VSM, and EDX. The obtained results confirmed that the palladium nanoparticles stabilized by glucosamine immobilized onto the magnetic support exhibited high activity in cross-coupling reactions of Suzuki-Miyaura and Mizoroki-Heck. Various aryl halides were coupled with arylboronic acid (Suzuki cross-coupling reaction) and olefins (Heck reactions) under the green conditions to provide corresponding products in high to excellent yields. Interestingly, the catalyst can be easily isolated from the reaction media by magnetic decantation and can subsequently be applied for consecutive reaction cycles (at least seven times) with no notable reduction in the catalytic activity.

- Bis(NHC)-Pd-catalyzed one-pot competitive C-C*C-C, C-C*C-O, C-C*C-N, and C-O*C-N cross-coupling reactions on an aryl di-halide catalyzed by a homogenous basic ionic liquid (TAIm[OH]) under base-free, ligand-free, and solvent-free conditions
-
Bis(NHC)-Pd-catalyzed competitive asymmetrical C-C*C-C, C-C*C-O, C-C*C-N, and O-C*C-N cross-coupling reactions were performedviathe one-pot strategy in the presence of a new ionic liquid, which played the roles of solvent, base, and ligand simultaneously. The ionic liquid was prepared based on a methyl imidazolium moiety with hydroxyl counter anionsviaa Hofmann elimination on a 1,3,5-triazine framework (TAIm[OH]). Pd ions could be efficiently coordinated through the bis(NHC)-ligand moiety in the ionic liquid. Based on differences in the competitive kinetics of C-C cross-coupling reactions (Heck, Suzuki, and Sonogashira) with C-N and C-O cross-coupling reactions, and also differences in the kinetics of aryl halides, the coupling reactions could be selectively performed with a low amount of by-products. The competitive cross-coupling reactions were thus performed with high selectivity under mild reaction conditions.

- Synthesis, crystal structure, and catalytic activity of bridged-bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) palladium(II) complexes in selective Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling reactions
-
A series of three 1,3-propanediyl bridged bis(N-heterocyclic carbene)palladium(II) complexes (Pd-BNH1, Pd-BNH2, and Pd-BNH3), with + I effect order of the N-substituents of the ligand (isopropyl > benzyl > methoxyphenyl), was the subject of a spectroscopic, structural, computational and catalytic investigation. The bis(NHC)PdBr2 complexes were evaluated in Mizoroki-Heck coupling reactions of aryl bromides with styrene or acrylate derivatives and showed high catalytic efficiency to produce diarylethenes and cinnamic acid derivatives. The X-ray structure of the most active palladium complex Pd-BNH3 shows that the Pd(II) center is bonded to the two carbon atoms of the bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) and two bromide ligands in cis position, resulting in a distorted square planar geometry. The NMR data of Pd-BNH3 are consistent with a single chair-boat rigid conformer in solution with no dynamic behavior of the 8-membered ring palladacycle in the temperature range 25–120 °C. The catalytic activities of three Pd-bridged bis(NHC) complexes in the Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling reactions were not found to have a direct correlation with +I effect order of the N-substituents of the ligand. However, a direct correlation was found between the DFT calculated absolute softness of the three complexes with their respective catalytic activity. The highest calculated softness, in the case of Pd-BNH3, is expected to favor the coordination steps of both the soft aryl bromides and alkenes in the Heck catalytic cycle.

- NiFe2O4@SiO2@ZrO2/SO42-/Cu/Co nanoparticles: A novel, efficient, magnetically recyclable and bimetallic catalyst for Pd-free Suzuki, Heck and C-N cross-coupling reactions in aqueous media
-
The novel heterogeneous bimetallic nanoparticles of Cu-Co were synthesized based on magnetic nanoparticles, and the magnetic nanocatalyst was characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, EDX mapping, BET, TEM, HRTEM, FTIR, TGA, and VSM. This catalyst was successfully applied as a recyclable magnetically catalyst in Heck, Suzuki, and C-N cross-coupling reactions with various aryl halides (iodides, bromides, and chlorides as challengeable substrates), with olefins, phenylboronic acid, and amines, respectively. We considered the rise of synergetic effects from the different Lewis acid and Br?nsted acid sites present in the catalyst. The catalyst was synthesized with cheap, available materials and a simple synthesis method. The catalyst can be separated easily using an external magnet. It was recycled for more than ten runs without a sensible loss of its catalytic activity, and no significant leaching of the Cu and Co quantity was observed. The significant benefits of the method are high-level generality, simple operation, and there are no heavy metals and toxic solvents. This is a quick, easy, efficacious and environmentally friendly protocol, and no by-products are formed in the reaction. These features make it an appropriate practical alternative protocol. In comparison with recent works, the other advantage of this catalyst is the synthesis of a wide variety of C-C and C-N bond derivatives (more than 40 derivatives). The other significant advantage is the low temperature of the reaction and the use of the least possible amount of the catalyst (0.003 g). The efficiency was good to excellent and the catalyst selectivity has been high. We aspire that our study inspires more interest to design novel catalysts based on using low-cost metal ions (such as cobalt and copper) in the cross-coupling reactions. This journal is

- Introduction of a Recyclable Basic Ionic Solvent with Bis-(NHC) Ligand Property and The Possibility of Immobilization on Magnetite for Ligand- and Base-Free Pd-Catalyzed Heck, Suzuki and Sonogashira Cross-Coupling Reactions in Water
-
A new versatile and recyclable NHC ligand precursor has been developed with ligand, base, and solvent functionalities for the efficient Pd-catalyzed Heck, Suzuki and Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions under mild conditions. Furthermore, NHC ligand precursor was immobilized on magnetite and its catalytic activity was also evaluated towards the coupling reactions as a heterogeneous catalyst. The NHC ligand precursor was prepared with imidazolium functionalization of TCT followed by a simple ion exchange by hydroxide ions. However, the results revealed an excellent catalytic activity for the both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic systems. 1.52?g.cm?3 and 1194 cP was obtained for the density and viscosity of the NHC ligand precursor respectively. On the other hand, the heterogeneous type could be readily recovered from the reaction mixture and reused for several times while preserving its properties. Heterogeneous nature of the magnetic catalyst was studied by hot filtration, mercury poisoning, and three-phase tests. High to excellent yields were obtained for all entries for the both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts, which reflects the high consistency of the catalyst. - Palladium Complexes with Phenoxy- And Amidate-Functionalized N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands Based on 3-Phenylimidazo[1,5- a]pyridine: Synthesis and Catalytic Application in Mizoroki-Heck Coupling Reactions with Ortho-Substituted Aryl Chlorides
-
Mononuclear and tetranuclear palladium complexes with functionalized "abnormal"N-heterocyclic carbene (aNHC) ligands based on 3-phenylimidazo[1,5-a]pyridine were synthesized. All of the new complexes were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The new complexes were applied in the Mizoroki-Heck coupling reaction of aryl chlorides with alkenes in neat n-tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB). The mononuclear palladium complex with a tridentate phenoxy- and amidate-functionalized aNHC ligand displayed activity superior to that of the palladium complex with a bidentate amidate-functionalized aNHC ligand. The new tetranuclear complex with the tridentate ligand displayed the best activities, capable of the activation of deactivated aryl chlorides as substrates with a low Pd atom loading. Even challenging sterically demanding ortho-substituted aryl chlorides were successfully utilized as substrates. The studies revealed that the robustness of the catalyst precursor is crucial in delivering high catalytic activities. Also, the promising use of tetranuclear palladium complexes with functionalized aNHC ligands as the catalyst precursors in the Mizoroki-Heck coupling reaction in neat TBAB was demonstrated.

- PVC-NHC-Pd(0): An efficient and reusable heterogeneous catalyst for highly cis-selective semihydrogenation of alkynes using formic acid as hydrogen source

PVC-NHC-Pd(0) catalyst was prepared and exerted to highly cis-selective semihydrogenation of diarylacetylene using formic acid as hydrogen source under mild condition. The as-prepared catalyst was well characterized by various techniques such as FT-IR, 1H NMR, XRD, SEM, EDX, TEM, XPS, and TGA. The catalyst can be easily recovered and recycled without loss of its activity and selectivity owing to the metal-ligand interaction between Pd(0) with polymeric NHC ligands. This protocol is an attractive alternative of the classical Lindlar's hydrogenation.

- Dinuclear cobalt complex-catalyzed stereodivergent semireduction of alkynes: Switchable selectivities controlled by H2O
-
Catalytic semireduction of internal alkynes to alkenes is very important for organic synthesis. Although great success has been achieved in this area, switchable Z/E stereoselectivity based on a single catalyst for the semireduction of internal alkynes is a longstanding challenge due to the multichemo- and stereoselectivity, especially based on less-expensive earth-abundant metals. Herein, we describe a switchable semireduction of alkynes to (Z)- or (E)-alkenes catalyzed by a dinuclear cobalt complex supported by a macrocyclic bis pyridyl diimine (PDI) ligand. It was found that cis-reduction of the alkyne occurs first and the Z-E alkene stereoisomerization process is formally controlled by the amount of H2O, since the concentration of H2O may influence the catalytic activity of the catalyst for isomerization. Therefore, this protocol provides a facile way to switch to either the (Z)- or (E)-olefin isomer in a single transformation by adjusting the amount of water.

- Synthesis of new adamantyl-imine palladium(II) complexes and their application in Mizoroki-Heck and Suzuki-Miyaura C[sbnd]C cross-coupling reactions
-
Improving carbon–carbon cross-coupling reactions is an ongoing process and finding the most versatile and stable catalyst precursors has been of great interest. Ligand design has been proven to be important since it is responsible for providing electron density and steric saturation around the metal centre, thus contributing towards the stereo-electronic properties. The adamantyl moiety has been used to generate highly bulky and electron-rich ligands for application in palladium-catalysed cross-coupling reactions. Accordingly, we have prepared some Schiff-base adamantyl ligands (L1-L3) and complexed them with [PdCl2(MeCN)2] to afford the (pre)catalysts C1-C3, which were successfully applied in Mizoroki-Heck and Suzuki-Miyaura carbon–carbon cross-coupling reactions. The cross-coupling reaction products were obtained in good yields using 0.5 mol % Pd catalyst loading. C2 and C3 showed remarkable activity in the Mizoroki-Heck coupling reactions involving substrates with substituents on the olefin and aryl halide (including 4-Cl, 4-CH3, -CO2Me and -CO2Et). We also, observed that the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling system was active towards challenging activated and deactivated aryl chlorides, with to up 70% conversions recorded. The mercury poisoning tests conducted revealed that the catalysts act as homogenous molecular active species in the Mizoroki-Heck reactions and act as both homogenous and heterogeneous catalysts in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions.

- Ruthenium-Catalyzed E-Selective Partial Hydrogenation of Alkynes under Transfer-Hydrogenation Conditions using Paraformaldehyde as Hydrogen Source
-
E-alkenes were synthesized with up to 100 % E/Z selectivity via ruthenium-catalyzed partial hydrogenation of different aliphatic and aromatic alkynes under transfer-hydrogenation conditions. Paraformaldehyde as a safe, cheap and easily available solid hydrogen carrier was used for the first time as hydrogen source in the presence of water for transfer-hydrogenation of alkynes. Optimization reactions showed the best results for the commercially available binuclear [Ru(p-cymene)Cl2]2 complex as pre-catalyst in combination with 2,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1-binaphthyl (BINAP) as ligand (1 : 1 ratio per Ru monomer to ligand). Mechanistic investigations showed that the origin of E-selectivity in this reaction is the fast Z to E isomerization of the formed alkenes. Mild reaction conditions plus the use of cheap, easily available and safe materials as well as simple setup and inexpensive catalyst turn this protocol into a feasible and promising stereo complementary procedure to the well-known Z-selective Lindlar reduction in late-stage syntheses. This procedure can also be used for the production of deuterated alkenes simply using d2-paraformaldehyde and D2O mixtures.

- A Solid-Phase Assisted Flow Approach to In Situ Wittig-Type Olefination Coupling
-
Described herein is the development of a continuous flow, solid-phase triphenylphosphine (PS-PPh3) assisted protocol to facilitate the in situ coupling of reciprocal pairs of halogen and carbonyl functionalised molecular pairs by a Wittig olefination within 15 mins. The protocol entails injecting a single solution (1 : 1 CHCl3 : EtOH) containing the halogenated and carbonyl-based substrates into a continuously flowing stream of CHCl3 : EtOH (1 : 1), passed through a fixed bed of K2CO3 and PS-PPh3. With advancement to the previous PS-PPh3 coupling procedures, the method employs a traditional polystyrene-based immobilisation matrix, the substrate scope of the protocol extended to substituted ketones, secondary alkyl chlorides, and an unprotected maleimide scaffold.

- Energy-Transfer-Mediated Photocatalysis by a Bioinspired Organic Perylenephotosensitizer HiBRCP
-
Energy transfer plays a special role in photocatalysis by utilizing the potential energy of the excited state through indirect excitation, in which a photosensitizer determines the thermodynamic feasibility of the reaction. Bioinspired by the energy-transfer ability of natural product cercosporin, here we developed a green and highly efficient organic photosensitizer HiBRCP (hexaisobutyryl reduced cercosporin) through structural modification of cercosporin. After structural manipulation, its triplet energy was greatly improved, and then, it could markedly promote the efficient geometrical isomerization of alkenes from the E-isomer to the Z-isomer. Moreover, it was also effective for energy-transfer-mediated organometallic catalysis, which allowed realization of the cross-coupling of aryl bromides and carboxylic acids through efficient energy transfer from HiBRCP to nickel complexes. Thus, the study on the relationship between structural manipulation and their photophysical properties provided guidance for further modification of cercosporin, which could be applied to more meaningful and challenging energy-transfer reactions.

- Tandem Acceptorless Dehydrogenative Coupling-Decyanation under Nickel Catalysis
-
The development of new catalytic processes based on abundantly available starting materials by cheap metals is always a fascinating task and marks an important transition in the chemical industry. Herein, a nickel-catalyzed acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols with nitriles followed by decyanation of nitriles to access diversely substituted olefins is reported. This unprecedented C=C bond-forming methodology takes place in a tandem manner with the formation of formamide as a sole byproduct. The significant advantages of this strategy are the low-cost nickel catalyst, good functional group compatibility (ether, thioether, halo, cyano, ester, amino, N/O/S heterocycles; 43 examples), synthetic convenience, and high reaction selectivity and efficiency.

- A photocatalyst-free visible-light-mediated solvent-switchable route to stilbenes/vinyl sulfones from β-nitrostyrenes and arylazo sulfones
-
Photocatalyst-free visible-light-mediated reactions, based on the presence of a visible-light-absorbing functional group in the starting material itself in order to exclude the often costly, hazardous, degradable and difficult to remove or recover photoredox catalysts, have been gaining momentum recently. We have employed this approach to develop a denitrative photocatalyst-free visible-light-mediated protocol for the arylation/sulfonylation of β-nitrostyrenes employing arylazo sulfones (bench-stable photolabile compounds) in a switchable solvent-controlled manner. Arylazo sulfones served as the aryl and sulfonyl radical precursors under blue LED irradiation for the synthesis oftrans-stilbenes and (E)-vinyl sulfones in CH3CN and dioxane/H2O 2?:?1, respectively. The absence of any metal, photocatalyst and additive; excellent selectivity (E-stereochemistry) and solvent-switchability; and the use of visible light and ambient temperature are the prime assets of the developed method. Moreover, we report the first photocatalyst-free visible light-driven route to synthesize stilbenes and vinyl sulfones from readily available β-nitrostyrenes.

- A hydrophilic heterogeneous cobalt catalyst for fluoride-free Hiyama, Suzuki, Heck and Hirao cross-coupling reactions in water
-
A hydrophilic heterogeneous cobalt catalyst of chitosan, denoted as mTEG-CS-Co-Schiff-base, has been successfully prepared. This newly synthesized catalyst was characterized by different methods such as XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, TGA, FT-IR, 13C{1H} CP/MAS NMR, XPS and ICP analyses. The catalyst displayed excellent activity for the palladium and fluoride-free Hiyama, Suzuki, Heck and Hirao reactions of various aryl iodides, bromides and chlorides (i.e., the most challenging aryl halides which are cheaper and more widely available than aryl iodides and bromides) in water. The presence of triethylene glycol tags with hydrophilic character on the Co-complex supported on chitosan provides dispersion of the catalyst particles in water, which leads to higher catalytic performance and also facile catalyst recovery by successive extraction. It was reused for at least six successive runs without any discernible decrease in its catalytic activity or any remarkable changes in catalyst structure. The use of water as a green solvent, without requiring any additive or organic solvent, as well as use of a low cost and abundant cobalt catalyst instead of expensive Pd catalysts along with the catalyst recovery and scalability, make this method favorable from environmental and economic points of view for the C-C and C(sp2)-P coupling reactions. Notably, this is the first report on the application of a cobalt catalyst in Hiyama reactions.

A series of new unsymmetrical (XYC–1 type) palladacycles (C1–C4) were designed and synthesized with simple anchoring ligands L1–4H (L1H = 2-((2-(4-methoxybenzylidene)-1-phenylhydrazinyl)methyl)pyridine, L2H = N,N-dimethyl-4-((2-phenyl-2-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)hydrazono)methyl)aniline, L3H = N,N-diethyl-4-((2-phenyl-2-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)hydrazono)methyl) aniline and L4H = 4-(4-((2-phenyl-2-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)hydrazono) methyl)phenyl)morpholine H = dissociable proton). Molecular structure of catalysts (C1–C4) were further established by single X-ray crystallographic studies. The catalytic performance of palladacycles (C1–C4) was explored with the direct Csp2–H arylation of imidazoles with aryl halide derivatives. These palladacycles were also applied for investigating of Mizoroki–Heck reactions with aryl halides and acrylate derivatives. During catalytic cycle in situ generated Pd(0) nanoparticles were characterized by XPS, SEM and TEM analysis and possible reaction pathways were proposed. The catalyst was employed as a pre-catalyst for the gram-scale synthesis of octinoxate, which is utilized as a UV-B sunscreen agent.

- Synthesis of a Cellulosic Pd(salen)-Type Catalytic Complex as a Green and Recyclable Catalyst for Cross-Coupling Reactions
-
Abstract: A green recyclable cellulose-supported Pd(salen)-type catalyst was synthesized through sequential three steps: chlorination with thionyl chloride, modification by ethylenediamine, and the formation of Schiff base with salicylaldehyde to immobilize palladium chloride through multiple binding sites. This novel heterogeneous cellulosic Pd(salen)-type catalytic complex was fully characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TEM, XPS, ICP-AES and TG. The traditional cross-coupling chemistry, such as Suzuki, Heck, Sonogashira, Buchwald–Hartwig amination and etherification, was then investigated in the presence of the above cellulose-palladium nanoparticle. Studies have shown that the synthesized catalyst shows high activity and efficiency for all types of transformations, providing the corresponding carbon–carbon or carbon–heteroatom coupling products in a general and mild manner. Furthermore, the catalyst demonstrates high to excellent yields and is easily recycled by simple filtration for up to twelve cycles without any significant loss of catalytic activity. - Synthesis and characterization of mesoporous organosilica supported palladium (SBA-Pr-NCQ-Pd) as an efficient nanocatalyst in the Mizoroki–Heck coupling reaction
-
In the present study, the modification of a mesoporous organosilica nanocomposite SBA-15 (Santa Barbara Amorphous 15) was carried out in two steps, first through the surface functionalization of SBA-Pr-NH2 with 2-chloroquinoline-3-carbaldehyde to form SBA-Pr-NCQ, and then through a post-modification process with palladium ions. The target nanocompound structure of SBA-Pr-NCQ-Pd was characterized by different techniques (thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy). The catalytic performance of the porous inorganic–organic hybrid nanocomposite (SBA-Pr-NCQ-Pd) in one of the most important carbon–carbon bond-forming processes, the Mizoroki–Heck coupling reaction of aryl halides and methacrylate in water/ethanol media, was examined. Compared to previous reports, this protocol afforded some advantages, such as high yields of products, short reaction times, catalyst stability without leaching, simple methodology, easy workup, and greener conditions. Also, the nanocatalyst can be easily separated from the reaction mixture and reused several times without a significant decrease in activity and promises economic as well as environmental benefits.

- Synthesis of Pd@graphene oxide framework nanocatalyst with enhanced activity in Heck-Mizoroki cross-coupling reaction
-
A new method was developed for producing a catalyst involving a Pd nanoparticle (NP) embedded in a graphene oxide framework (Pd@GOF) with ordered macro- and mesoporous structures. First, 5,5′-diamino-2,2′-bipyridine was selected as cross-linking for covalent modification of GO nanosheets to prepare a three-dimensional (3D) framework with interlayer spaces in which well-dispersed and ultra-small Pd NPs in situ grew and embedded the framework. The synthesized nanopores 3D Pd@GOF can act as nanoreactors to help the reaction substrates thoroughly come into contact with the surface of Pd NPs, thereby exhibiting high activity toward the Heck reaction, rarely reported concerning Pd NPs supported on one-side functionalized graphene. The Pd@GOF catalyst can be used 10 times without any significant loss in the catalytic activity, confirming the long-term stability of this catalyst. Therefore, the covalently assembled GOF was proposed as a universal platform for hosting noble metal NPs to construct the desired metal@GOF nanocatalyst with improved activity and stability that can be used in a broad range of practical applications.

- Immobilized Pd on Eggshell Membrane: A powerful and recyclable catalyst for Suzuki and Heck cross-coupling reactions in water
-
A stable heterogeneous palladium catalysts, the waste eggshell membrane (ESM) anchored Pd complex, was synthesized by a simple and green technique. The catalyst obtained can display an outstanding catalytic activity for Suzuki and Heck coupling reactions in water media. The reactions of various aryl halides with aryl boronic acids and terminal alkenes provided the corresponding products in moderate to excellent yields. More importantly, this novel and efficient catalyst with high stability can be easily reused for at least twelve times with no decrease of the catalytic activity, performing an endurable and wide tolerance of the substrates. Facile synthesis, high catalytic activity, and recyclability make these catalysts interesting for further studies.

- Synthesis of Stilbenes by Rhodium-Catalyzed Aerobic Alkenylation of Arenes via C-H Activation
-
Arene alkenylation is commonly achieved by late transition metal-mediated C(sp2)-C(sp2) cross-coupling, but this strategy typically requires prefunctionalized substrates (e.g., with halides or pseudohalides) and/or the presence of a directing group on the arene. Transition metal-mediated arene C-H activation and alkenylation offers an alternative method to functionalize arene substrates. Herein, we report a rhodium-catalyzed oxidative arene alkenylation from arenes and styrenes to prepare stilbene and stilbene derivatives. The reaction is successful with several functional groups on both the arene and the olefin including fluoride, chloride, trifluoromethyl, ester, nitro, acetate, cyanide, and ether groups. Reactions of monosubstituted arenes are selective for alkenylation at the meta and para positions, generally with approximately 2:1 selectivity, respectively. Resveratrol and (E)-1,2,3-trimethoxy-5-(4-methoxystyryl)benzene (DMU-212) are synthesized by this single-step approach in high yield. Comparison with palladium catalysis showed that rhodium catalysis is more selective for meta-functionalization for monosubstituted arenes and that the Rh catalysis has better tolerance of halogen groups.

- Half-sandwich ruthenium complex containing ortho-carborane benzothiazole as well as preparation and application
-
The invention relates to a half-sandwich ruthenium complex containing ortho-carborane alkyl benzothiazole as well as preparation and application thereof. The preparation method specifically comprisesthe following steps: i) adding an organic mixed solution of n-butyl lithium into an organic mixed solution of ortho-carborane at the temperature of -70 DEG C to-80 DEG C, then heating to the room temperature, and continuously reacting for 30-60 minutes; ii) adding bromo-benzothiazole, and carrying out a reaction for 6-8 hours at a room temperature; and iii) adding a binuclear ruthenium compound, reacting at the room temperature for 3-5 hours, and separating to obtain the half-sandwich ruthenium complex. The catalyst is applied to preparation of stilbene derivatives by catalyzing condensation reaction of methylbenzene and aromatic aldehyde. Compared with the prior art, the disclosed complex is insensitive to air and water and stable in property, and shows efficient catalytic activity in catalyzing the condensation reaction of methylbenzene and aromatic aldehyde, and the preparation method is simple, green, high in yield, mild in reaction conditions and good in universality.

- Multidentate N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes of Nickel and Palladium: Structural Analysis and Catalytic Application in Mizoroki–Heck Coupling Reaction
-
Two series of electron-rich metal (Ni and Pd) complexes, namely a pyridine-coordinated tridentate NHC/amidate/phenoxy metal complex and a tetradentate complex bearing an extra pyridyl group, were synthesized. Two carbene moieties, imidazole-based and benzimidazole-based NHCs, were also incorporated into the ligand backbones. Seven of the new complexes were structurally characterized and comparative structural analysis revealed that the tetradentate complex with a flanking pyridyl side-arm was less distorted, leading to chelation-assisted stronger NHC coordination and hence a shorter metal–carbene bond. The catalytic activities of the two sets of palladium complexes for the Mizoroki–Heck coupling reaction were investigated. The comparative data showed that despite the higher thermal stability and the presence of the flanking hemilabile pyridyl side-arm which provided unsaturation to the metal center, the catalytic performance was slightly inferior to that of the tridentate palladium complex with a “throw-away” pyridine ligand. The tridentate palladium complex with the benzimidazole-based NHC moiety was the most effective catalyst, allowing the utilization of a range of aryl chlorides including deactivated substrates with a low 0.2 mol-% Pd loading in molten n-tetrabutylammonium bromide.

- Copper-Catalyzed 8-Aminoquinoline-Directed Oxidative C-H/N-H Coupling for N-Arylation of Sulfoximines
-
A copper-catalyzed cross-dehydrogenative C-H/N-H coupling has been devised to access a series of N-arylated sulfoximines in high yield from 8-aminoquinoline-derived benzamides and sulfoximines. The reaction is scalable, and mechanistic studies favor the involvement of an organometallic pathway, where C-H bond cleavage is presumed to be the kinetically relevant step. The utility of sulfoximine-coupled benzamides was displayed through the nickel-catalyzed acceptorless dehydrogenative olefination of benzyl alcohols.

- Efficient hydroarylation of terminal alkynes with sodium tetraphenylborate performed in water under mild conditions
-
The hydroarylation of terminal alkynes with sodium tetraphenylborate was performed in high yield within 3 h at room temperature in water, using palladium(II) complexes with imidazole ligands as catalysts. Under these conditions, differently substituted phenylacetylene substrates were converted to arylalkenes and aryl-substituted dienes. High conversion and excellent selectivity were achieved in the hydroarylation of alkynols with sodium tetraphenylborate. Only one product, arylalkene with an OH group, was formed in these reactions with the yield dependent on the kind of alkynol used. A plausible hydroarylation reaction mechanism was proposed on the basis of the palladium species identified in the reaction mixture and H/D exchange studies. The contribution of water as the hydride source was evidenced.

- cis-Selective Transfer Semihydrogenation of Alkynes by Merging Visible-Light Catalysis with Cobalt Catalysis
-
Herein, the first example of visible-light-driven, cobalt-catalyzed transfer semihydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes is reported. It is carried out by using Ir[dF(CF3)ppy]2(dtbbpy)]PF6 as photosensitizer, CoBr2/n-Bu3P as proton-reducing catalyst, and i-Pr2NEt/AcOH as the hydrogen source. Under the established catalytic system, the semihydrogenation proceeds with Z as the major selectivity and with inhibition of over-reduction. Under mild reaction conditions, both internal and terminal alkynes, as well as reducible functional groups such as halogen, cyano, and ester, are tolerated. Preliminary mechanistic studies revealed the dual role of the photosensitizer in initiating the reaction via a single-electron transfer process and controlling the stereoselectivity via an energy transfer process. - Stereo-controlledanti-hydromagnesiation of aryl alkynes by magnesium hydrides
-
A concise protocol foranti-hydromagnesiation of aryl alkynes was established using 1?:?1 molar combination of sodium hydride (NaH) and magnesium iodide (MgI2) without the aid of any transition metal catalysts. The resulting alkenylmagnesium intermediates could be trapped with a series of electrophiles, thus providing facile accesses to stereochemically well-defined functionalized alkenes. Mechanistic studies by experimental and theoretical approaches imply that polar hydride addition from magnesium hydride (MgH2) is responsible for the process.

Here, we report a Cr-catalyzed semi-hydrogenation of internal alkynes to the corresponding Z-alkenes with good stereocontrol (up to 99/1 for dialkyl alkynes). The catalyst comprises the commercial reagents chromium(III) acetylacetonate, Cr(acac)3, and diisobutylaluminium hydride, DIBAL?H, in THF. The semi-hydrogenation operates at mild conditions (1-5 bar H2, 30 °C).

- A Simple Nickel Catalyst Enabling an E-Selective Alkyne Semihydrogenation
-
Stereoselective alkyne semihydrogenations are attractive approaches to alkenes, which are key building blocks for synthesis. With regards to the most atom-economic reducing agent dihydrogen (H2), only few catalysts for the challenging E-selective alkyne semihydrogenation have been disclosed, each with a unique substrate scope profile. Here, we show that a commercially available nickel catalyst facilitates the E-selective alkyne semihydrogenation of a wide variety of substituted internal alkynes. This results in a simple and broadly applicable overall protocol to stereoselectively access E-alkenes employing H2, which could serve as a general method for synthesis.

- Tuning the Selectivity of Palladium Catalysts for Hydroformylation and Semihydrogenation of Alkynes: Experimental and Mechanistic Studies
-
Here, we describe a selective palladium catalyst system for chemodivergent functionalization of alkynes with syngas. In the presence of an advanced ligand L2 bearing 2-pyridyl substituent as a built-in base, either hydroformylation or semihydrogenation of diverse alkynes occurs with high chemo- and stereoselectivity under comparable conditions. Mechanistic studies, including density functional theory (DFT) calculations, kinetic analysis, and control experiments, revealed that the strength and concentration of acidic cocatalysts play a decisive role in controlling the chemoselectivity. DFT studies disclosed that ligand L2 not only promotes heterolytic activation of hydrogen similar to frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) systems in the hydrogenolysis step for hydroformylation but also suppresses CO coordination to promote semihydrogenation under strong acid conditions. This switchable selectivity provides a strategy to design new catalysts for desired products.

Selective direct ruthenium-catalyzed semihydrogenation of diaryl alkynes to the corresponding E-alkenes has been achieved using alcohols as the hydrogen source. The method employs a simple ruthenium catalyst, does not require external ligands, and affords the desired products in > 99% NMR yield in most cases (up to 93% isolated yield). Best results were obtained using benzyl alcohol as the hydrogen donor, although biorenewable alcohols such as furfuryl alcohol could also be applied. In addition, tandem semihydrogenation-alkylation reactions were demonstrated, with potential applications in the synthesis of resveratrol derivatives.

- Intermolecular Carbonyl–olefin Metathesis with Vinyl Ethers Catalyzed by Homogeneous and Solid Acids in Flow
-
The carbonyl–olefin metathesis reaction has experienced significant advances in the last seven years with new catalysts and reaction protocols. However, most of these procedures involve soluble catalysts for intramolecular reactions in batch. Herein, we show that recoverable, inexpensive, easy to handle, non-toxic, and widely available simple solid acids, such as the aluminosilicate montmorillonite, can catalyze the intermolecular carbonyl–olefin metathesis of aromatic ketones and aldehydes with vinyl ethers in-flow, to give alkenes with complete trans stereoselectivity on multi-gram scale and high yields. Experimental and computational data support a mechanism based on a carbocation-induced Grob fragmentation. These results open the way for the industrial implementation of carbonyl–olefin metathesis over solid catalysts in continuous mode, which is still the origin and main application of the parent alkene–alkene cross-metathesis.

For this purpose, 1-[3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl] urea (TMSPU), hydrazine and CuI were used sequentially to modify Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell magnetic nanoparticles to obtain an efficient magnetic transition metal catalyst. Various analytical techniques were used to characterize the catalyst to show that the achieved structure and its properties are well-suited for coupling reactions. Finally, Mizoroki-Heck and Ullmann coupling reactions were performed using Fe3O4@SiO2@PrNCu catalyst. The new catalyst offer simple synthetic procedure, convenient use for routine casework and low price. The Fe3O4@SiO2@PrNCu catalyst was easily separated by means of a permanent and ordinary magnet and the recovered catalyst was reused in six cycles without any significant loss of activity.
