- Aryliminodimagnesium Reagents. V. The Reaction with Bifunctional Nitroarenes
-
The reactions of p-methylphenyliminodimagnesium reagent (p-MeC6H4N(MgBr)2) with p- and m-dinitrobenzenes, bis(p-nitrophenyl)methane, bis(p-nitrophenyl) sulfide and ether, p- and m-nitrobenzaldehydes as well as 4-nitro-4'-methylbenzophenone were investigated. p-Dinitrobenzene, which is the strongest electron-acceptor among the substrates used, gave ca. 30percent combined yield of bis(azoxy) and azoxy azo products. The oxidative coupling product, 4,4'-dimethylazobenzene, was isolated in 20-30percent yields.About 60percent combined yield of the bis(azoxy) and azoxy azo products was obtained in the same reaction with m-dinitrobenzene, which is less electron-accepting than the p-isomer.In the reaction of bis(p-nitrophenyl)methane, bis(p-nitrophenyl)sulfide and ether with five molar amounts of the reagent, ca. 70percent combined yields of bis(azoxy), azoxy azo, and bis(azo) products were obtained. On the treatment of the nitrobenzaldehydes and the nitrobenzophenone, in contrast, the reaction took place exclusively on the nitro group. The results are discussed in terms of the electron-accepting ability of substrates.

- H2O2-mediated room temperature synthesis of 2-arylacetophenones from arylhydrazines and vinyl azides in water
-
An environmentally benign, cost-efficient and practical methodology for the room temperature synthesis of 2-arylacetophenones in water has been discovered. The facile and efficient transformation involves the oxidative radical addition of arylhydrazines with α-aryl vinyl azides in the presence of H2O2 (as a radical initiator) and PEG-800 (as a phase-transfer catalyst). From the viewpoint of green chemistry and organic synthesis, the present protocol is of great significance because of using cheap, non-toxic and readily available starting materials and reagents as well as amenability to gram-scale synthesis, which provides an attractive strategy to access 2-arylacetophenones.

- Correlation studies in the oxidation of Vanillin Schiff bases by acid bromate - A kinetic and semi-empirical approach
-
Kinetics and mechanistic aspects of oxidation of Vanillin Schiff bases (obtained from Vanillin and p-substituted anilines) by bromate in acid medium has been studied at 313 ?K. The reaction exhibited first order in [bromate] and less than unity order each in [Vanillin Schiff base] and [acid]. The increase in the rate of reaction with decrease in dielectric constant of the medium is observed with all the studied substrates. The reaction failed to induce the polymerization of acrylonitrile. Electron withdrawing substituents in the aniline ring moiety of Vanillin Schiff base accelerate the rate of oxidation to a large extent and electron releasing substituents retard the rate. The order of reactivity is found to be p-nitro ?> ?p-bromo ?> ?p-chloro ?> ?–H ?> ?p-fluoro ?> ?p-methyl ?> ?p-methoxy ?> ?p-ethoxy and the sensitivity of the substrates towards the reaction rate is further supported by the semi-empirical calculation of electronic properties and global descriptors of the substrates (Vanillin Schiff bases) with different substituents in the aniline ring moiety. The observed trend in the reactivity of the substrates was correlated with the calculated descriptors like electronegativity, chemical potential, electrophilicity index, chemical hardness and frontier molecular orbitals. The linear free-energy relationship is characterized by a straight line in the Hammett's plot of log k versus σ. The ρ values are positive and increase with increase in temperature. From the Exner and Arrhenius plots, the isokinetic relationship is discussed. Oxidation products identified are p-substituted azobenzene and vanillic acid. Based on the experimental observations, a plausible mechanism is proposed and rate law is derived.

- Invisible Silver Guests Boost Order in a Framework That Cyclizes and Deposits Ag3Sb Nanodots
-
The infusion of metal guests into (i.e., metalating) the porous medium of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a topical approach to wide-ranging functionalization purposes. We report the notable interactions of AgSbF6 guests with the designer MOF host ZrL1 [Zr6O4(OH)7(L1)4.5(H2O)4]. (1) The heavy-atom guests of AgSbF6 induce order in the MOF host to allow the movable alkyne side arm to be fully located by X-ray diffraction, but they themselves curiously remain highly disordered and absent in the strucutral model. The enhanced order of the framework can be generally ascribed to interaction of the silver guests with the host alkyne and thioether functions, while the invisible heavy-atom guest represents a new phenomenon in the metalation of open framework materials. (2) The AgSbF6 guests also participate in the thermocyclization of the vicinal alkyne units of the L1 linker (at 450 °C) and form the rare nanoparticle of Ag3Sb supported on the concomitantly formed nanographene network. The resulted composite exhibits high electrical conductivity (1.0 S/cm) as well as useful, mitigated catalytic activity for selectively converting nitroarenes into the industrially important azo compounds, i.e., without overshooting to form the amine side products. The heterogeneous/cyclable catalysis entails only the cheap reducing reagents of NaBH4, ethanol, and water, with yields being generally close to 90%.

- Chemoselective electrochemical reduction of nitroarenes with gaseous ammonia
-
Valuable aromatic nitrogen compounds can be synthesized by reduction of nitroarenes. Herein, we report electrochemical reduction of nitroarenes by a protocol that uses inert graphite felt as electrodes and ammonia as a reductant. Depending on the cell voltage and the solvent, the protocol can be used to obtain aromatic azoxy, azo, and hydrazo compounds, as well as aniline derivatives with high chemoselectivities. The protocol can be readily scaled up to >10 g with no decrease in yield, demonstrating its potential synthetic utility. A stepwise cathodic reduction pathway was proposed to account for the generations of products in turn.

- Selective Mild Oxidation of Anilines into Nitroarenes by Catalytic Activation of Mesoporous Frameworks Linked with Gold-Loaded Mn3O4 Nanoparticles
-
This work reports the synthesis and catalytic application of mesoporous Au-loaded Mn3O4 nanoparticle assemblies (MNAs) with different Au contents, i. e., 0.2, 0.5 and 1 wt %, towards the selective oxidation of anilines into the corresponding nitroarenes. Among common oxidants, as well as several supported gold nanoparticle platforms, Au/Mn3O4 MNAs containing 0.5 wt % Au with an average particle size of 3–4 nm show the best catalytic performance in the presence of tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as a mild oxidant. In all cases, the corresponding nitroarenes were isolated in high to excellent yields (85–97 %) and selectivity (>98 %) from acetonitrile or greener solvents, such as ethyl acetate, after simple flash chromatography purification. The 0.5 % Au/Mn3O4 catalyst can be isolated and reused four times without a significant loss of its activity and can be applied successfully to a lab-scale reaction of p-toluidine (1 mmol) leading to the p-nitrotulene in 83 % yield. The presence of AuNPs on the Mn3O4 surface enhances the catalytic activity for the formation of the desired nitroarene. A reasonable mechanism was proposed including the plausible formation of two intermediates, the corresponding N-aryl hydroxylamine and the nitrosoarene.

- Selective Reduction of Nitroarenes to Arylamines by the Cooperative Action of Methylhydrazine and a Tris(N-heterocyclic thioamidate) Cobalt(III) Complex
-
We report an efficient catalytic protocol that chemoselectively reduces nitroarenes to arylamines, by using methylhydrazine as a reducing agent in combination with the easily synthesized and robust catalyst tris(N-heterocyclic thioamidate) Co(III) complex [Co(κS,N-tfmp2S)3], tfmp2S = 4-(trifluoromethyl)-pyrimidine-2-thiolate. A series of arylamines and heterocyclic amines were formed in excellent yields and chemoselectivity. High conversion yields of nitroarenes into the corresponding amines were observed by using polar protic solvents, such as MeOH and iPrOH. Among several hydrogen donors that were examined, methylhydrazine demonstrated the best performance. Preliminary mechanistic investigations, supported by UV-vis and NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and high-resolution mass spectrometry, suggest a cooperative action of methylhydrazine and [Co(κS,N-tfmp2S)3] via a coordination activation pathway that leads to the formation of a reduced cobalt species, responsible for the catalytic transformation. In general, the corresponding N-arylhydroxylamines were identified as the sole intermediates. Nevertheless, the corresponding nitrosoarenes can also be formed as intermediates, which, however, are rapidly transformed into the desired arylamines in the presence of methylhydrazine through a noncatalytic path. On the basis of the observed high chemoselectivity and yields, and the fast and clean reaction processes, the present catalytic system [Co(κS,N-tfmp2S)3]/MeNHNH2 shows promise for the efficient synthesis of aromatic amines that could find various industrial applications.

- Azo synthesis meets molecular iodine catalysis
-
A metal-free synthetic protocol for azo compound formation by the direct oxidation of hydrazine HN-NH bonds to azo group functionality catalyzed by molecular iodine is disclosed. The strengths of this reactivity include rapid reaction times, low catalyst loadings, use of ambient dioxygen as a stoichiometric oxidant, and ease of experimental set-up and azo product isolation. Mechanistic studies and density functional theory computations offering insight into this reactivity, as well as the events leading to azo group formation are presented. Collectively, this study expands the potential of main-group element iodine as an inexpensive catalyst, while delivering a useful transformation for forming azo compounds.

- Photocatalytic oxidative coupling of arylamines for the synthesis of azoaromatics and the role of O2 in the mechanism
-
The photocatalytic oxidative coupling of aryl amines to selectively synthesize azoaromatic compounds has been realized. Multiple different photocatalysts can be used to perform the general reaction; however, Ir(dF-CF3-ppy)2(dtbpy)+, where dF-CF3-ppy is 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-5-(trifluoromethyl)-pyridine and dtpby is 4,4′-tert-butyl-2,2′-bipyridine, showed the greatest range of reactivity with various amine substrates. Both electron-rich and -deficient amines can be coupled with yields up to 95% under an ambient air atmosphere. Oxygen was deemed to be essential for the reaction and is utilized in the regeneration of the photocatalyst. Fluorescence quenching and radical trap experiments indicate an amine radical coupling mechanism that proceeds through a hydrazoaromatic intermediate before further oxidation occurs to form the desired azoaromatic products.

Catalytic synthesis of aromatic azo compounds by oxidative coupling of anilines using molecular oxygen represents a facile, green and valuable process; however, such an economical process suffers from poor catalytic activity and selectivity. Herein, novel single crystal MnOOH nanotubes with abundant Mn3+sites and high oxygen defects were successfully synthesized. The catalyst exhibited high selectivity for oxidative coupling of anilines, achieving complete transformation into aromatic azo compounds under mild conditions, even at room temperature.

- Metal- and oxidant-free electrochemically promoted oxidative coupling of amines
-
The selective oxidation of amines into imines is a priority research topic in organic synthesis and has attracted much attention over the past few decades. However, the oxidation of amines generally suffers from the drawback of transition-metal, even noble-metal catalysts. Thus, the strategy of metal- and oxidant-free selective synthesis of imines is highly desirable yet largely unmet. This paper unravels a metal-free and external oxidant-free electrochemical strategy for the oxidative coupling methodology of amines. This general transformation is compatible with various functional amines and led to functionalized imines in moderate to satisfactory yields.

- Heterocoupling of Different Aryl Nitrenes to Produce Asymmetric Azoarenes Using Iron-Alkoxide Catalysis and Investigation of the Cis-Trans Isomerism of Selected Bulky Asymmetric Azoarenes
-
Heterocoupling of different aryl nitrenes (originating in organoazides) to produce asymmetric azoarenes using two different iron-alkoxide catalysts is reported. Fe(OCtBu2(3,5-Ph2C6H3))2(THF)2 was previously shown to catalyze the homocoupling of a variety of aryl nitrenes. While bulky nitrenes featuring ortho substituents were coupled more efficiently, coupling of the less bulky meta- and para-substituted aryl nitrenes was also demonstrated. In contrast, the iron(II) complex of a chelating bis(alkoxide) ligand, Fe[OO]Ph(THF)2, was previously shown to efficiently couple nonbulky aryl nitrenes lacking substituents in ortho positions. In the present work, we demonstrate that the combination of two different nitrenes (10 equiv overall, 5 equiv each) with Fe(OCtBu2(3,5-Ph2C6H3))2(THF)2 (10 mol %) produced a statistical or close to statistical distribution (25:25:50 for the two homocoupled products and the heterocoupled product, respectively) for various combinations containing one or two ortho alkyl substituents at one nitrene and a single ortho alkyl group at another. Surprisingly, the combination of Fe[OO]Ph(THF)2 with two different nonbulky organoazides was found to primarily catalyze the homocoupling of the resulting aryl nitrenes (21-49%), with a smaller proportion (~8-15%) of asymmetric product formation. Six different heterocoupled products featuring one or two alkyl groups in the ortho positions were isolated as a mixture of cis and trans isomers at room temperature and characterized by NMR spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and high-resolution mass spectrometry. Following their isolation, cis-trans isomerism in these species was investigated. Heating the cis-trans mixture to 60 °C produced the trans isomer cleanly, while shining UV light on the cis-trans mixture significantly increased the amount of the cis isomer (up to 90%). The cis isomer was found to be relatively stable, exhibiting t1/2 values of approximately 10 days at room temperature.

- Tandem selective reduction of nitroarenes catalyzed by palladium nanoclusters
-
We report a catalytic tandem reduction of nitroarenes by sodium borohydride (NaBH4) in aqueous solution under ambient conditions, which can selectively produce five categories of nitrogen-containing compounds: anilines, N-aryl hydroxylamines, azoxy-, azo- and hydrazo-compounds. The catalyst is in situ-generated ultrasmall palladium nanoclusters (Pd NCs, diameter of 1.3 ± 0.3 nm) from the reduction of Pd(OAc)2 by NaBH4. These highly active Pd NCs are stabilized by surface-coordinated nitroarenes, which inhibit the further growth and aggregation of Pd NCs. By controlling the concentration of Pd(OAc)2 (0.1-0.5 mol% of nitroarene) and NaBH4, the water/ethanol solvent ratio and the tandem reaction sequence, each of the five categories of N-containing compounds can be obtained with excellent yields (up to 98%) in less than 30 min at room temperature. This tunable catalytic tandem reaction works efficiently with a broad range of nitroarene substrates and offers a green and sustainable method for the rapid and large-scale production of valuable N-containing chemicals.

- Intermetallic Nanocatalysts from Heterobimetallic Group 10-14 Pyridine-2-thiolate Precursors
-
Intermetallic compounds are atomically ordered inorganic materials containing two or more transition metals and main-group elements in unique crystal structures. Intermetallics based on group 10 and group 14 metals have shown enhanced activity, selectivity, and durability in comparison to simple metals and alloys in many catalytic reactions. While high-temperature solid-state methods to prepare intermetallic compounds exist, softer synthetic methods can provide key advantages, such as enabling the preparation of metastable phases or of smaller particles with increased surface areas for catalysis. Here, we study a generalized family of heterobimetallic precursors to binary intermetallics, each containing a group 10 metal and a group 14 tetrel bonded together and supported by pincer-like pyridine-2-thiolate ligands. Upon thermal decomposition, these heterobimetallic complexes form 10-14 binary intermetallic nanocrystals. Experiments and density functional theory (DFT) computations help in better understanding the reactivity of these precursors toward the synthesis of specific intermetallic binary phases. Using Pd2Sn as an example, we demonstrate that nanoparticles made in this way can act as uniquely selective catalysts for the reduction of nitroarenes to azoxyarenes, which highlights the utility of the intermetallics made by our method. Employing heterobimetallic pincer complexes as precursors toward binary nanocrystals and other metal-rich intermetallics provides opportunities to explore the fundamental chemistry and applications of these materials.

- Continuous and green microflow synthesis of azobenzene compounds catalyzed by consecutively prepared tetrahedron CuBr
-
An environmentally friendly and cross-selective process intensification for the continuous synthesis of symmetric aromatic azo compounds by using self-made cuprous bromide as the catalyst under mild conditions in the microreactor was developed. A novel tetrahedron cuprous bromide catalyst which shows outstanding catalytic activity and satisfactory stability has been synthesized in continuous flow microreactor. The online immobilization of self-made cuprous bromide on the catalyst bed achieved oxidative coupling of aromatic amines (oxygen as oxidant) and high-performance gas–liquid–solid three-phase reaction, which strongly limited the possibility of undesired reaction pathways, improving product selectivity and reducing waste generation. Meanwhile, the yield of azo-coupling reaction was up to 98% under optimized condition. As compared with earlier traditional method (diazotization reaction) for synthesizing azobenzene, the designed micro-flow process displays signi?cant advances in terms of selectivity, waste emissions, sustainability and productivity. The combination of online immobilization of self-made cuprous bromide and precise and safe control through the microreactor provides a green solution for the industrial production of valuable aromatic azo compounds.

- Synthesis of novel 1,2-diarylpyrazolidin-3-one–based compounds and their evaluation as broad spectrum antibacterial agents

There is a continuous need to develop new antibacterial agents with non-traditional mechanisms to combat the nonstop emerging resistance to most of the antibiotics used in clinical settings. We identified novel pyrazolidinone derivatives as antibacterial hits in an in-house library screening and synthesized several derivatives in order to improve the potency and increase the polarity of the discovered hit compounds. The oxime derivative 24 exhibited promising antibacterial activity against E. coli TolC, B. subtilis and S. aureus with MIC values of 4, 10 and 20 μg/mL, respectively. The new lead compound 24 was found to exhibit a weak dual inhibitory activity against both the E. coli MurA and MurB enzymes with IC50 values of 88.1 and 79.5 μM, respectively, which could partially explain its antibacterial effect. A comparison with the previously reported, structurally related pyrazolidinediones suggested that the oxime functionality at position 4 enhanced the activity against MurA and recovered the activity against the MurB enzyme. Compound 24 can serve as a lead for further development of novel and safe antibiotics with potential broad spectrum activity.

- Fluorination of Photoswitchable Muscarinic Agonists Tunes Receptor Pharmacology and Photochromic Properties
-
Red-shifted azobenzene scaffolds have emerged as useful molecular photoswitches to expand potential applications of photopharmacological tool compounds. As one of them, tetra-ortho-fluoro azobenzene is well compatible for the design of visible-light-responsive systems, providing stable and bidirectional photoconversions and tissue-compatible characteristics. Using the unsubstituted azobenzene core and its tetra-ortho-fluorinated analogue, we have developed a set of uni- and bivalent photoswitchable toolbox derivatives of the highly potent muscarinic acetylcholine receptor agonist iperoxo. We investigated the impact of the substitution pattern on receptor activity and evaluated the different binding modes. Compounds 9b and 15b show excellent photochemical properties and biological activity as fluorination of the azobenzene core alters not only the photochromic behavior but also the pharmacological profile at the muscarinic M1 receptor. These findings demonstrate that incorporation of fluorinated azobenzenes not just may alter photophysical properties but can exhibit a considerably different biological profile that has to be carefully investigated.

- One-Pot Synthesis of Heterobimetallic Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs) for Multifunctional Catalysis
-
A one-pot synthesis of bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (Co/Fe-MOFs) was achieved by treating stoichiometric amounts of Fe and Co salts with 2-aminoterephthalic acid (NH2-BDC). Monometallic Fe (catalyst A) and Co (catalyst F) were also prepared along with mixed-metal Fe/Co catalysts (B–E) by changing the Fe/Co ratio. For mixed-metal catalysts (B–E) SEM energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis confirmed the incorporation of both Fe and Co in the catalysts. However, a spindle-shaped morphology, typically known for the Fe-MIL-88B structure and confirmed by PXRD analysis, was only observed for catalysts A–D. To test the catalytic potential of mixed-metal MOFs, reduction of nitroarenes was selected as a benchmark reaction. Incorporation of Co enhanced the activity of the catalysts compared with the parent NH2-BDC-Fe catalyst. These MOFs were also tested as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the best activity was exhibited by mixed-metal Fe/Co-MOF (Fe/Co batch ratio=1). The catalyst provided a current density of 10 mA cm?2 at 410 mV overpotential, which is comparable to the benchmark OER catalyst (i.e., RuO2). Moreover, it showed long-term stability in 1 m KOH. In a third catalytic test, dehydrogenation of sodium borohydride showed high activity (turnover frequency=87 min?1) and hydrogen generation rate (67 L min?1 g?1 catalyst). This is the first example of the synthesis of bimetallic MOFs as multifunctional catalysts particularly for catalytic reduction of nitroarenes and dehydrogenation reactions.

- Immobilized antimony species on magnetite: A novel and highly efficient magnetically reusable nanocatalyst for direct and gram-scale reductive-coupling of nitroarenes to azoarenes

In this study, magnetic nanoparticles of Fe3O4@SbFx from the immobilization of SbF3 on magnetite were synthesized. The prepared nanocomposite system was then characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. Next, the catalytic activity of Fe3O4@SbFx MNPs was highlighted by one-pot reductive-coupling of aromatic nitro compounds to the corresponding azoarene materials with NaBH4. The reactions were carried out in refluxing EtOH within 6-25 min to afford the products in high yields. The reusability of the Sb-magnetite system was also studied for 6 consecutive cycles without significant loss of catalytic activity. This synthetic protocol provided several advantages in terms of introducing a novel catalytic system based on antimony species for direct and gram-scale preparation of azoarenes from nitroarenes, low loading of the nanocatalyst, mild reaction conditions, using ethanol as a green and economic solvent and high yield of the products.

- Modulating the catalytic behavior of non-noble metal nanoparticles by inter-particle interaction for chemoselective hydrogenation of nitroarenes into corresponding azoxy or azo compounds
-
Aromatic azoxy compounds have wide applications and they can be prepared by stoichiometric or catalytic reactions with H2O2 or N2H4 starting from anilines or nitroarenes. In this work, we will present the direct chemoselective hydrogenation of nitroarenes with H2 to give aromatic azoxy compounds under base-free mild conditions, with a bifunctional catalytic system formed by Ni nanoparticles covered by a few layers of carbon (Ni@C NPs) and CeO2 nanoparticles. The catalytic performance of Ni@C-CeO2 catalyst surpasses the state-of-art Au/CeO2 catalyst for the direct production of azoxybenzene from nitrobenzene. By means of kinetic and spectroscopic results, a bifunctional mechanism is proposed in which, the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene can be stopped at the formation of azoxybenzene with >95% conversion and >93% selectivity, or can be further driven to the formation of azobenzene with >85% selectivity. By making a bifunctional catalyst with a non-noble metal, one can achieve chemoselective hydrogenation of nitroarenes not only to anilines, but also to corresponding azoxy and azo compounds.

- Chitosan-derived N-doped carbon catalysts with a metallic core for the oxidative dehydrogenation of NH-NH bonds
-
Sustainable metal-encased (Ni-Co/Fe/Cu)?N-doped-C catalysts were prepared from bio-waste and used for the oxidative dehydrogenation reaction. A unique combination of bimetals, in situ N doping, and porous carbon surfaces resulted in the formation of the effective "three-in-one" catalysts. These N-doped graphene-like carbon shells with bimetals were synthesized via the complexation of metal salts with chitosan and the subsequent pyrolysis at 700 °C. A well-developed thin-layer structure with large lateral dimensions could be obtained by using Ni-Fe as the precursor. Importantly, the Ni-Fe?N-doped-C catalyst was found to be superior for the dehydrogenation of hydrazobenzene under additive/oxidant-free conditions compared to the conventional and other synthesized catalysts. Characterizations by TEM and XPS accompanied by BET analysis revealed that the enhanced catalytic properties of the catalysts arose from their bimetals and could be attributed to the graphitic shell structure and graphitic N species, respectively.

- Conversion of anilines into azobenzenes in acetic acid with perborate and Mo(VI): correlation of reactivities
-
Azobenzenes are extensively used to dye textiles and leather and by tuning the substituent in the ring, vivid colours are obtained. Here, we report preparation of a large number of azobenzenes in good yield from commercially available anilines using sodium perborate (SPB) and catalytic amount of Na2MoO4 under mild conditions. Glacial acetic acid is the solvent of choice and the aniline to azobenzene conversion is zero, first and first orders with respect to SPB, Na2MoO4 and aniline, respectively. Based on the kinetic orders, UV–visible spectra and cyclic voltammograms, the conversion mechanism has been suggested. The reaction rates of about 50 anilines at 20–50?°C and their energy and entropy of activation conform to the isokinetic or Exner relationship and compensation effect, respectively. However, the reaction rates, deduced by the so far adopted method, fail to comply with the Hammett correlation. The specific reaction rates of molecular anilines, obtained through a modified calculation, conform to the Hammett relationship. Thus, this work presents a convenient inexpensive non-hazardous method of preparation of a larger number of azobenzenes, and shows the requirement of modification in obtaining the true reaction rates of anilines in acetic acid and the validity of Hammett relationship in the conversion process, indicating operation of a common mechanism.

- Aerobic Oxidative coupling of aniline catalyzed by one-dimensional manganese hydroxide nanomaterials
-
The aerobic oxidative coupling of aniline is an effective process for producing aromatic azo compounds, which are widely used in the organic chemical industry. The development of heterogeneous catalysts for this reaction would be advantageous because of their recyclability and convenience in posttreatment. In this work, one-dimensional Mn(OH) 2 nanostructure with various shapes were synthesized through the adjustment of various surfactants. The as-synthesized Mn(OH) 2 nanobelts and nanowires showed superior catalytic activity in the activation of oxygen and aniline. Aromatic azo compounds with a variety of substituents were produced through the coupling of the corresponding anilines without additives under ambient conditions.

- Efficient Solar-Driven Hydrogen Transfer by Bismuth-Based Photocatalyst with Engineered Basic Sites
-
Photocatalytic organic conversions involving a hydrogen transfer (HT) step have attracted much attention, but the efficiency and selectivity under visible light irradiation still needs to be significantly enhanced. Here we have developed a noble metal-free, basic-site engineered bismuth oxybromide [Bi24O31Br10(OH)] that can accelerate the photocatalytic HT step in both reduction and oxidation reactions, i.e., nitrobenzene to azo/azoxybenzene, quinones to quinols, thiones to thiols, and alcohols to ketones under visible light irradiation and ambient conditions. Remarkably, quantum efficiencies of 42% and 32% for the nitrobenzene reduction can be reached under 410 and 450 nm irradiation, respectively. The Bi24O31Br10(OH) photocatalyst also exhibits excellent performance in up-scaling and stability under visible light and even solar irradiation, revealing economic potential for industrial applications.

- Photocatalysis Enabling Acceptorless Dehydrogenation of Diaryl Hydrazines at Room Temperature
-
Aromatic azo compounds are privileged structural motifs, and they exhibit a myriad of pharmaceutical as well as industrial applications. Here, we report a catalytic acceptorless dehydrogenation of diarylhydrazine derivatives to access a wide variety of aryl-azo compounds with the removal of molecular hydrogen as the sole byproduct. This distinctive reactivity has been achieved under dual catalytic conditions by merging the visible-light active [Ru(bpy)3]2+ as the photoredox catalyst and Co(dmgH)2(py)Cl as the proton-reduction catalyst. The reaction proceeds smoothly under very mild and benign conditions and operates at ambient temperature. This dual catalytic approach is highly compatible with many different functional groups and has a broad substrate scope. We have also demonstrated the reversible hydrogen storage and release phenomenon on hydrazobenzene/azobenzene couple to show the utility of these compounds as hydrogen storage materials. Further diversification of azobenzene was shown by a transition-metal-catalyzed azo-group-directed ortho-C-H bond functionalization.

- Oxidative nitrene transfer from azides to alkynes via Ti(ii)/Ti(iv) redox catalysis: Formal [2+2+1] synthesis of pyrroles
-
Catalytic oxidative nitrene transfer from azides with the early transition metals is rare, and has not been observed without the support of redox noninnocent spectator ligands. Here, we report the formal [2+2+1] coupling of azides and alkynes via TiII/TiIV redox catalysis from simple Ti halide imido precatalysts. These reactions yield polysubstituted N-alkyl pyrroles, including N-benzyl protected pyrroles and rare examples of very electron rich pentaalkyl pyrroles. Mechanistic analysis reveals that [2+2+1] reactions with bulky azides have different mechanistic features from previously-reported reactions using azobenzene as a nitrene source.

- Catalytic Azoarene Synthesis from Aryl Azides Enabled by a Dinuclear Ni Complex

Azoarenes are valuable chromophores that have been extensively incorporated as photoswitchable elements in molecular machines and biologically active compounds. Here, we report a catalytic nitrene dimerization reaction that provides access to structurally and electronically diverse azoarenes. The reaction utilizes aryl azides as nitrene precursors and generates only gaseous N2 as a byproduct. By circumventing the use of a stoichiometric redox reagent, a broad range of organic functional groups are tolerated, and common byproducts of current methods are avoided. A catalyst featuring a Ni - Ni bond is found to be uniquely effective relative to those containing only a single Ni center. The mechanistic origins of this nuclearity effect are described.

The invention discloses a method for preparing an azobenzene compound with continuous flows. The method comprises the following steps: (1) carrying out on-line filling of a columnar microreactor withcuprous bromide prepared with continuous flows; (2) carrying out on-line water washing and ethanol washing on the columnar microreactor filled with the cuprous bromide; (3) dissolving aromatic amine and pyridine into a solvent so as to obtain a mixed solution; (4) respectively inputting and mixing the mixed solution and oxygen into a casing type flow reactor simultaneously so as to obtain a gas-liquid mixture; (5) pumping the gas-liquid mixture into the columnar microreactor of the step (2) to carry out an oxidative coupling reaction, thereby obtaining an azobenzene compound. By adopting the method, integration of preparation, on-line filling and washing of a cuprous bromide catalyst and synthesis of an azo product in a synthesis process of the azobenzene compound is achieved, oxidation ofthe cuprous bromide in preparation and manual filling processes and a process of joining in catalytic synthesis of the azobenzene compound is reduced, and the mixing efficiency of three phases of gases, liquids and solids is improved.

- Convenient Electrocatalytic Synthesis of Azobenzenes from Nitroaromatic Derivatives Using SmI2
-
The synthesis of azobenzenes has been a long-standing challenge. Their current preparation at a preparative or industrial scale requires stoichiometric amounts of environmentally unfriendly reactants. Herein, we demonstrate that the catalytic use of electrogenerated samarium diiodide (SmI2) could promote, in one-step synthesis, the reduction of nitrobenzenes into azobenzenes in high yields under mild reaction conditions. This catalytic procedure contains many elements satisfying a sustainable chemical process for the preparation of one of the most widely wanted family of chemical compounds. The easy synthetic procedure, and the absence of precious metals, bases, and nonhazardous substances, already makes our catalytic procedure a serious alternative to currently available methods. This is a promising method for the efficient synthesis of both symmetrical and asymmetrical azo compounds with a high functional group tolerance.

- Silver and palladium alloy nanoparticle catalysts: Reductive coupling of nitrobenzene through light irradiation
-
Silver-palladium (Ag-Pd) alloy nanoparticles strongly absorb visible light and exhibit significantly higher photocatalytic activity compared to both pure palladium (Pd) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles. Photocatalysts of Ag-Pd alloy nanoparticles on ZrO2 and Al2O3 supports are developed to catalyze the nitroaromatic coupling to the corresponding azo compounds under visible light irradiation. Ag-Pd alloy NP/ZrO2 exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity for nitrobenzene coupling to azobenzene (yield of ~80% in 3 hours). The photocatalytic efficiency could be optimized by altering the Ag:Pd ratio of the alloy nanoparticles, irradiation light intensity, temperature and wavelength. The rate of the reaction depends on the population and energy of the excited electrons, which can be improved by increasing the light intensity or by using a shorter wavelength. The knowledge developed in this study may inspire further studies on Ag alloy photocatalysts and organic syntheses using Ag-Pd nanoparticle catalysts driven under visible light Irradiation.
