An ESR Study of the Reduction and Photoreduction of Polycrystalline MoO3 with Atomic Hydrogen at Room Temperature
Upon reduction of polycrystalline MoO3 with atomic hydrogen at room temperature well resolved ESR spectra were obtained showing the presence of Mo5+ ions in a crystal field of nonaxial symmetry. The spectra are characterized by gx = 1.944, gy = 1.955, gz = 1.879 and ax = 3.2 mT, ay = 3.0 mT, az = 7.0 mT.The hydrogen treatment also resulted in the formation of hydroxyl groups as evidenced by IR absorption measurements. The reduction of the MoO3 samples was markedly enhanced by illumination with wavelengths /= 330 nm. . - keyword: ESR of MoO3 / Semiconductor / Reduction and Photoreduction
