In this work, synthesis of Pd-NHC-γ-Fe2O3-n-butyl-SO3H and its activity as a bifunctional heterogeneous nanocatalyst containing Pd-NHC and acidic functional groups, are described. This newly synthesized nanomagnetic catalyst is fully characterized by different methods such as FT-IR, XPS, TEM, VSM, ICP and TG analysis. At first, the catalytic activity of Pd-NHC-γ-Fe2O3-n-butyl-SO3H is evaluated for the reduction of nitroarenes in aqueous media using NaBH4 as a clean source of hydrogen generation at ambient temperature. Using the promising results obtained from the nitroarene reduction, this catalytic system is used for two one-pot protocols including reduction-Schiff base condensation and reduction-carbonylation of various nitroarenes. In these reactions the in situ formed amines are further reacted with aldehydes to yield imines or carbonylated to amides. The desired products are obtained in good to high yields in the presence of Pd-NHC-γ-Fe2O3-n-butyl-SO3H as a bifunctional catalyst. The catalyst is reused with the aid of a magnetic bar for up to six consecutive cycles without any drastic loss of its catalytic activity.

- Design and stereoselective synthesis of novel β-lactone and β-lactams as potent anticancer agents on breast cancer cells

To produce a novel class of anticancer compounds, an efficient method for synthesizing novel β-lactone and β-lactam frameworks was developed based on the reaction of a new ketene with C=O and C=N bonds. Functionalized 2-azetidinones were efficiently synthesized by employing 2,4-dichlorophenoxylketene, which was generated in situ. The reaction of the ketene with aldehydes was not successful and in all cases except for 4-nitrobenzaldehyde, a rearranged dimer of the ketene was obtained as a lactone. Anticancer cellular activity of all new β-lactams and lactones on breast cancer cells was studied. All new synthesized compounds exhibited potential anticancer activity which may guarantee their future application in moderate chemotherapy.

In the key step, a ketene was generated on the C-2 of pyrrole ring and reacted with aromatic imines to form trans -β-lactams as the only observed products. 3-Phenyl-2-(1-H-pyrrol-1-yl) propanoic acid has been used as a ketene source in synthesizing of monocyclic-2-azetidinones. Hindrance in ketene and imines successfully controlled the diastereoselectivity of the reaction. For example, in some cases only one isomer was achieved. By using Mukaiyama reagent, the leaving group in acid was activated and the by-products were separated by simple aqueous work-up. DFT calculation indicated that the benzyl-N-pyrrolylketene has nonconjugated structure and the pyrrolyl ring is perpendicular to the ketene plane in both the twisted and planar structures.

Ir-catalyzed sp2C?H amidation of aldehydes with various anilines as stoichiometric or catalytic directing groups was accomplished. A wide range of substrates were selectively amidated in good to excellent yields with broad functional group tolerance. The iridacycle complexes were isolated, characterized, and proved as key intermediates. Kinetic studies and Hammett plots provided detailed understandings of this amidation. According to the mechanism, the electron-rich ArSO2N3was proved effective for intermolecular sp3C?H amidation.

In this research, nano magnetic sulfated zirconia was prepared and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements and vibrational sample magnetometry (VSM). Its catalytic activity was investigated for the one-pot three component green synthesis of α-aminonitriles using various aldehydes and ketones at room temperature in ethanol. This protocol has various advantages such as: simple work-up, short reaction time, high product yields and easy recovery and reusability of the catalyst.
