- Regioselective Iodine/Zinc Exchange for the Selective Functionalization of Polyiodinated Arenes and Heterocycles in Toluene
-
Regioselective I/Zn-exchange reactions were performed on polyiodinated arenes or heterocycles within 20 minutes at 0-25 °C using the bimetallic combination pTol2Zn2LiOR [R = (CH2)2N(Me)(CH2)2NMe2] in toluene. The resulting diaryl- or diheteroarylzincs reacted well with allylic bromides and acyl chlorides to provide functionalized (hetero)- aryl iodides in good yields.

- Desulfonyloxyiodination of arenesulfonic acids with mCPBA and molecular iodine
-
Treatment of p-alkylbenzenesulfonic acids with mCPBA and molecular iodine gave p-alkyliodobenzenes in good to moderate yields via electrophilic ipso-substitution by the iodonium species (I+) formed. This desulfonyloxyiodination was promoted by the addition of a catalytic amount of iodoarenes, such as o-iodobenzoic acid. The same treatment of dimethylbenzenesulfonic acids and trimethylbenzenesulfonic acids with mCPBA and molecular iodine proceeded smoothly both in the absence and in the presence of o-iodobenzoic acid to provide the corresponding monoiodo-dimethylbenzene and diiodo-dimethylbenzene, and diiodo-trimethylbenzene and triiodo- trimethylbenzene, in good to moderate yields, respectively. On the other hand, the same desulfonyloxyiodination of benzenesulfonic acid and p-chlorobenzenesulfonic acid with mCPBA and molecular iodine proceeded only in the presence of o-iodobenzoic acid to generate iodobenzene and p-chloroiodobenzene, respectively, in moderate yields.

- Synthesis of tricyclic heterocycles via a tandem aryl alkylation/Heck coupling sequence
-
(Chemical Equation Presented) A norbornene-mediated palladium-catalyzed sequence is described in which two alkyl-aryl bonds and one alkenyl-aryl bond are formed in one pot with use of microwave irradiation. A variety of symmetrical and unsymmetrical oxygen-, nitrogen-, silicon-, and sulfur-containing tricyclic heterocycles were synthesized from a Heck acceptor and an aryl iodide containing two tethered alkyl halides. This approach was further applied to the synthesis of a tricyclic mescaline analogue.

- Catalysis and regioselectivity of the aqueous Heck reaction by Pd(0) nanoparticles under ultrasonic irradiation
-
An aqueous Heck reaction carried out under ultrasonic irradiation at the ambient temperature (25 °C) has been shown in this study to afford high yields of corresponding products. It was found that as a catalyst for the reaction palladium forms nanoparticles in-situ, characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analyses, and can be recycled. Furthermore, the Heck reaction under such mild and environmentally friendly conditions offers excellent regioselectivity of para-over ortho-substitution in phenyl iodides especially with electron-donating groups.
