- Heterobimetallic Pd/Mn and Pd/Co complexes as efficient and stereoselective catalysts for sequential Cu-free Sonogashira coupling–alkyne semi-hydrogenation reactions
-
A series of heterobimetallic PdII/MII complexes (MII = Mn, Co) were synthesised and tested as precatalysts for sequential Sonogashira coupling–alkyne semi-hydrogenation reactions to form Z-aryl alkenes. The carbometalated heterobimetallic PdII/CoII complex CoPdL3′ demonstrated an apparent cooperative effect compared to the corresponding monometallic counterparts. This compound was identified as a potent single-molecule catalyst for the one-pot Cu-free Sonogashira coupling of aryl bromides with terminal alkynes followed by chemo- and stereoselective semi-hydrogenation of the alkyne intermediate using NH3·BH3 as a hydrogen source. Furthermore, different aromatic substrates have been tested to show the generality of the reaction for the synthesis of Z-alkenes, including biologically active combretastatin A-4. In addition, the homogeneous nature of the catalytically active species was demonstrated.

- Palladium Nanoparticles Anchored on Magnesium Organosilicate: An Effective and Selective Catalyst for the Heck Reaction
-
A new and effective palladium catalyst supported on a magnesium organosilicate for application in the Heck reaction is presented. A group of compounds comprising 22 examples were synthesized in moderate to high yields (up to 99%) within a short time. The palladium supported on magnesium organosilicate catalyst was characterized as an amorphous solid by SEM, containing around 33% of palladium inside the solid, and even with this low quantity of palladium, the catalyst was very efficient in the Heck reaction. Besides, based on the Scherrer equation, the crystallite size of the synthesized palladium nanoparticles was ultrasmall (around 1.3 nm). This strategy is a simple and efficient route for the formation of C-C bonds via the Heck cross-coupling reaction.

- Electrochemical Aziridination of Internal Alkenes with Primary Amines
-
An electrochemical approach to prepare aziridines via an oxidative coupling between alkenes and primary alkyl amines was realized. The reaction is carried out in an electrochemical flow reactor, leading to short reaction/residence times (5 min), high yields, and broad scope. At the cathode, hydrogen is generated, which can be used in a second reactor to reduce the aziridine yielding the corresponding hydroaminated product.Aziridines are useful synthetic building blocks, widely employed for the preparation of various nitrogen-containing derivatives. As the current methods require the use of prefunctionalized amines, the development of a synthetic strategy toward aziridines that can establish the union of alkenes and amines would be of great synthetic value. Herein, we report an electrochemical approach, which realizes this concept via an oxidative coupling between alkenes and primary alkylamines. The reaction is carried out in an electrochemical flow reactor leading to short reaction/residence times (5 min), high yields, and broad scope. At the cathode, hydrogen is generated, which can be used in a second reactor to reduce the aziridine, yielding the corresponding hydroaminated product. Mechanistic investigations and DFT calculations revealed that the alkene is first anodically oxidized and subsequently reacted with the amine coupling partner. The central tenet in modern synthetic methodology is to develop new methods only using widely available organic building blocks. As a direct consequence, new activation strategies are required to cajole the coupling partners to react and, subsequently, forge new and useful chemical bonds. Using electrochemical activation, our methodology enables for the first time the direct coupling between olefins and amines to yield aziridines. Aziridines display interesting pharmacological activity and serve as valuable synthetic intermediates to prepare diverse nitrogen-containing derivatives. Interestingly, the sole byproduct generated in this process is hydrogen, which can be subsequently used to reduce the aziridine into the corresponding hydroaminated product. Hence, this electrochemical methodology can be regarded as green and sustainable from the vantage point of upgrading simple and widely available commodity chemicals.

- A Bis (BICAAC) Palladium(II) Complex: Synthesis and Implementation as Catalyst in Heck-Mizoroki and Suzuki-Miyaura Cross Coupling Reactions
-
Carbenes are one of the most appealing, well-explored, and exciting ligands in modern chemistry due to their tunable stereoelectronic properties and a wide area of applications. A palladium complex (BICAAC)2PdCl2 with a recently discovered cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene having bicyclo[2.2.2] octane skeleton (BICAAC) was synthesized and characterized. The enhanced σ-donating and π-accepting ability of this carbene lend a hand to form a robust Pd-carbene bond, which allowed us to probe its reactivity as a precatalyst in Heck-Mizoroki and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions with low catalyst loading in open-air conditions. The diverse range of substrates was explored for both the cross-coupling reactions. To get a better understanding of the catalytic reactions, several analytical techniques such as field-emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction were employed in a conclusive manner.

- Palladium nanoparticlesin situsynthesized onCyclea barbatapectin as a heterogeneous catalyst for Heck coupling in water, the reduction of nitrophenols and alkynes
-
This study develops an effective method for thein situsynthesis of palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) usingCyclea barbatapectin as a green reducing and stabilizing reagent. The PdNP@pectin nanocomposite was well characterized by analysis techniques such as UV-vis, FTIR, EDX, XRD, SEM, HR-TEM and STEM-mapping. Crystalline PdNPs were found to be distributed in the size range of 1-25 nm with the highest frequency of 6-12 nm. PdNP@pectin exhibited excellent recyclable catalysis activity for the Heck coupling reaction in water medium. The kinetics and recyclability of nanoparticles were investigated for the catalytic reduction ofo-,m- andp-nitrophenol. The result showed a good catalysis efficiency with five successful recycles without compromising much. In particular, the nanocomposite was used as a catalyst for the conversion of alkynes intocis-alkenes with KOH/DMF as a hydrogenation source. The reaction was also utilized effectively for the synthesis of sex pheromones, includingPlutella xylostella((Z)-11-hexadecen-1-yl acetate) andCylas formicarius((Z)-3-dodecen-1-yl(E)-2-butenoate) with the total yields of 70% and 68%, respectively. Therefore, PdNPs supported onC. barbatapectin are promising catalysis materials for application in various fields.

- Energy-Transfer-Mediated Photocatalysis by a Bioinspired Organic Perylenephotosensitizer HiBRCP
-
Energy transfer plays a special role in photocatalysis by utilizing the potential energy of the excited state through indirect excitation, in which a photosensitizer determines the thermodynamic feasibility of the reaction. Bioinspired by the energy-transfer ability of natural product cercosporin, here we developed a green and highly efficient organic photosensitizer HiBRCP (hexaisobutyryl reduced cercosporin) through structural modification of cercosporin. After structural manipulation, its triplet energy was greatly improved, and then, it could markedly promote the efficient geometrical isomerization of alkenes from the E-isomer to the Z-isomer. Moreover, it was also effective for energy-transfer-mediated organometallic catalysis, which allowed realization of the cross-coupling of aryl bromides and carboxylic acids through efficient energy transfer from HiBRCP to nickel complexes. Thus, the study on the relationship between structural manipulation and their photophysical properties provided guidance for further modification of cercosporin, which could be applied to more meaningful and challenging energy-transfer reactions.

- A photocatalyst-free visible-light-mediated solvent-switchable route to stilbenes/vinyl sulfones from β-nitrostyrenes and arylazo sulfones
-
Photocatalyst-free visible-light-mediated reactions, based on the presence of a visible-light-absorbing functional group in the starting material itself in order to exclude the often costly, hazardous, degradable and difficult to remove or recover photoredox catalysts, have been gaining momentum recently. We have employed this approach to develop a denitrative photocatalyst-free visible-light-mediated protocol for the arylation/sulfonylation of β-nitrostyrenes employing arylazo sulfones (bench-stable photolabile compounds) in a switchable solvent-controlled manner. Arylazo sulfones served as the aryl and sulfonyl radical precursors under blue LED irradiation for the synthesis oftrans-stilbenes and (E)-vinyl sulfones in CH3CN and dioxane/H2O 2?:?1, respectively. The absence of any metal, photocatalyst and additive; excellent selectivity (E-stereochemistry) and solvent-switchability; and the use of visible light and ambient temperature are the prime assets of the developed method. Moreover, we report the first photocatalyst-free visible light-driven route to synthesize stilbenes and vinyl sulfones from readily available β-nitrostyrenes.

- Tandem Acceptorless Dehydrogenative Coupling-Decyanation under Nickel Catalysis

The development of new catalytic processes based on abundantly available starting materials by cheap metals is always a fascinating task and marks an important transition in the chemical industry. Herein, a nickel-catalyzed acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols with nitriles followed by decyanation of nitriles to access diversely substituted olefins is reported. This unprecedented C=C bond-forming methodology takes place in a tandem manner with the formation of formamide as a sole byproduct. The significant advantages of this strategy are the low-cost nickel catalyst, good functional group compatibility (ether, thioether, halo, cyano, ester, amino, N/O/S heterocycles; 43 examples), synthetic convenience, and high reaction selectivity and efficiency.

- Mizoroki-Heck Reaction of Unstrained Aryl Ketones via Ligand-Promoted C-C Bond Olefination

Mizoroki-Heck reaction of unstrained aryl ketone with acrylate/styrene is accomplished via palladium-catalyzed ligand-promoted C-C bond cleavage. Various (hetero)aryl ketones are compatible in the reaction, affording the alkene product in good to excellent yields. Further applications in the late-stage olefination of some drugs, natural products, and fragrance-derived aryl ketones demonstrate the synthetic utility of this protocol. By employing ketone as both the directing group and the leaving group, 1,2-bifunctionalization is achieved via sequential ortho-C-H alkylation/ipso-Heck olefination.

- PVC-NHC-Pd(0): An efficient and reusable heterogeneous catalyst for highly cis-selective semihydrogenation of alkynes using formic acid as hydrogen source

PVC-NHC-Pd(0) catalyst was prepared and exerted to highly cis-selective semihydrogenation of diarylacetylene using formic acid as hydrogen source under mild condition. The as-prepared catalyst was well characterized by various techniques such as FT-IR, 1H NMR, XRD, SEM, EDX, TEM, XPS, and TGA. The catalyst can be easily recovered and recycled without loss of its activity and selectivity owing to the metal-ligand interaction between Pd(0) with polymeric NHC ligands. - Dinuclear cobalt complex-catalyzed stereodivergent semireduction of alkynes: Switchable selectivities controlled by H2O
-
Catalytic semireduction of internal alkynes to alkenes is very important for organic synthesis. Although great success has been achieved in this area, switchable Z/E stereoselectivity based on a single catalyst for the semireduction of internal alkynes is a longstanding challenge due to the multichemo- and stereoselectivity, especially based on less-expensive earth-abundant metals. Herein, we describe a switchable semireduction of alkynes to (Z)- or (E)-alkenes catalyzed by a dinuclear cobalt complex supported by a macrocyclic bis pyridyl diimine (PDI) ligand. It was found that cis-reduction of the alkyne occurs first and the Z-E alkene stereoisomerization process is formally controlled by the amount of H2O, since the concentration of H2O may influence the catalytic activity of the catalyst for isomerization. Therefore, this protocol provides a facile way to switch to either the (Z)- or (E)-olefin isomer in a single transformation by adjusting the amount of water.

- Catalytic activity of Pd dithiolate complexes with large-bite-angle diphosphines in Heck coupling reactions
-
Palladium(II) complexes of aryl dithiolates and wide-bite-angle diphosphines Xantphos and dppf have been developed as efficient catalysts in Suzuki and Suzuki carbonylation reactions. The catalytic activity of these highly stable, discrete and charged complexes was investigated in Heck coupling reactions of styrene and a variety of aryl bromides. Under optimized reaction conditions these palladium complexes showed excellent activity with high turnover number (6 × 106) and high turnover frequency (4 × 105 h?1). The effect of bite angle of diphosphines on the catalytic activity of the complexes [Pd2(P∩P)2(SC12H8S)]2(OTf)4 followed the trend P∩P = Xantphos > dppf > dppe as the order of their bite angles. The catalyst could be reused, and after three cycles the formation of significant amount of Pd nanoparticles was noticed, which were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and transmission electron microscopy. The high catalytic activity has been attributed to the Pd nanoparticles.

- Synthesis of Stilbenes by Rhodium-Catalyzed Aerobic Alkenylation of Arenes via C-H Activation
-
Arene alkenylation is commonly achieved by late transition metal-mediated C(sp2)-C(sp2) cross-coupling, but this strategy typically requires prefunctionalized substrates (e.g., with halides or pseudohalides) and/or the presence of a directing group on the arene. Transition metal-mediated arene C-H activation and alkenylation offers an alternative method to functionalize arene substrates. Herein, we report a rhodium-catalyzed oxidative arene alkenylation from arenes and styrenes to prepare stilbene and stilbene derivatives. The reaction is successful with several functional groups on both the arene and the olefin including fluoride, chloride, trifluoromethyl, ester, nitro, acetate, cyanide, and ether groups. Reactions of monosubstituted arenes are selective for alkenylation at the meta and para positions, generally with approximately 2:1 selectivity, respectively. Resveratrol and (E)-1,2,3-trimethoxy-5-(4-methoxystyryl)benzene (DMU-212) are synthesized by this single-step approach in high yield. Comparison with palladium catalysis showed that rhodium catalysis is more selective for meta-functionalization for monosubstituted arenes and that the Rh catalysis has better tolerance of halogen groups.

- Efficient hydroarylation of terminal alkynes with sodium tetraphenylborate performed in water under mild conditions
-
The hydroarylation of terminal alkynes with sodium tetraphenylborate was performed in high yield within 3 h at room temperature in water, using palladium(II) complexes with imidazole ligands as catalysts. Under these conditions, differently substituted phenylacetylene substrates were converted to arylalkenes and aryl-substituted dienes. High conversion and excellent selectivity were achieved in the hydroarylation of alkynols with sodium tetraphenylborate. Only one product, arylalkene with an OH group, was formed in these reactions with the yield dependent on the kind of alkynol used. A plausible hydroarylation reaction mechanism was proposed on the basis of the palladium species identified in the reaction mixture and H/D exchange studies. The contribution of water as the hydride source was evidenced.

- Build-up of double carbohelicenes using nitroarenes: Dual role of the nitro functionality as an activating and leaving group
-
The construction of double carbohelicenes is highly fascinating yet challenging work. Disclosed herein is a streamlined and simplified synthetic route to double carbohelicenes starting from nitroarenes through sequential nitro-activated ortho-C-H arylation, denitrative alkenylation and intramolecular cyclodehydrogenation. In this synthetic strategy, the nitro group plays a dual role namely as a leaving group for the denitrative alkenylation and as an activating group for ortho-C-H arylation, which is distinct from those of aryl halides in a conventional coupling reaction. In this work, the palladium-catalyzed Heck-type alkenylation of nitroarenes has been presented, in which the conventionally inert Ar-NO2 bond is cleaved. - Electro-Olefination—A Catalyst Free Stereoconvergent Strategy for the Functionalization of Alkenes
-
Conventional methods carrying out C(sp2)?C(sp2) bond formations are typically mediated by transition-metal-based catalysts. Herein, we conceptualize a complementary avenue to access such bonds by exploiting the potential of electrochemistry in combination with organoboron chemistry. We demonstrate a transition metal catalyst-free electrocoupling between (hetero)aryls and alkenes through readily available alkenyl-tri(hetero)aryl borate salts (ATBs) in a stereoconvergent fashion. This unprecedented transformation was investigated theoretically and experimentally and led to a library of functionalized alkenes. The concept was then carried further and applied to the synthesis of the natural product pinosylvin and the derivatization of the steroidal dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) scaffold.

- Oxidative Addition of Alkenyl and Alkynyl Iodides to a AuI Complex

The first isolated examples of intermolecular oxidative addition of alkenyl and alkynyl iodides to AuI are reported. Using a 5,5′-difluoro-2,2′-bipyridyl ligated complex, oxidative addition of geometrically defined alkenyl iodides occurs readily, reversibly and stereospecifically to give alkenyl-AuIII complexes. Conversely, reversible alkynyl iodide oxidative addition generates bimetallic complexes containing both AuIII and AuI centers. Stoichiometric studies show that both new initiation modes can form the basis for the development of C?C bond forming cross-couplings.

Herein, the first example of visible-light-driven, cobalt-catalyzed transfer semihydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes is reported. It is carried out by using Ir[dF(CF3)ppy]2(dtbbpy)]PF6 as photosensitizer, CoBr2/n-Bu3P as proton-reducing catalyst, and i-Pr2NEt/AcOH as the hydrogen source. Under the established catalytic system, the semihydrogenation proceeds with Z as the major selectivity and with inhibition of over-reduction. Under mild reaction conditions, both internal and terminal alkynes, as well as reducible functional groups such as halogen, cyano, and ester, are tolerated. Preliminary mechanistic studies revealed the dual role of the photosensitizer in initiating the reaction via a single-electron transfer process and controlling the stereoselectivity via an energy transfer process. - Stereo-controlledanti-hydromagnesiation of aryl alkynes by magnesium hydrides
-
A concise protocol foranti-hydromagnesiation of aryl alkynes was established using 1?:?1 molar combination of sodium hydride (NaH) and magnesium iodide (MgI2) without the aid of any transition metal catalysts. The resulting alkenylmagnesium intermediates could be trapped with a series of electrophiles, thus providing facile accesses to stereochemically well-defined functionalized alkenes. Mechanistic studies by experimental and theoretical approaches imply that polar hydride addition from magnesium hydride (MgH2) is responsible for the process.

- A Bidentate Ru(II)-NC Complex as a Catalyst for Semihydrogenation of Alkynes to (E)-Alkenes with Ethanol
-
Four Ru(II)-NC complexes were tested as catalysts for semihydrogenation of internal alkynes to (E)-alkenes with ethanol, and the complex {(C5H4N)(C6H4)}RuCl(CO)(PPh3)2 (1a) showed the highest activity. The reactions proceeded well with 1 mol % catalyst loading and 0.1 equiv of t-BuONa at 110 °C for 1 h, and 32 alkenes were synthesized with excellent E:Z selectivity. This is the first ruthenium-catalyzed semihydrogenation of internal alkynes to (E)-alkenes using ethanol as the hydrogen donor.

- Synthesis of glucoside-based imidazolium salts for Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction in water
-
Sugar-based imidazolium salts (IMSs) represent an outstanding type of material making them eye-catching for a wide variety of applications. Herein, a series of glucoside-based IMSs (Glu-IMSs) combining glucoside and imidazolium head groups with different substituents were synthesized. The catalytic activities of these Glu-IMSs were evaluated by Pd-catalyzed Heck–Mizoroki and Suzuki–Miyaura reactions in water. Among them, the Glu-IMSs contain both –OH and NHCs coordination sites was found to be the most efficient ancillary ligand in comparison with other Glu-IMSs with just single NHCs coordination site. The HR-TEM analysis showed that the palladium nanoparticles stabilized by the Glu-IMSs with an average size of ~4.0 nm was formed in the reaction system, which may be act as an efficient real catalytic species. Under the optimized reaction conditions, a series of novel fluorine-cored organic small molecule functional materials were synthesized with favorable yields.

- Benzimidazolyl Palladium Complexes as Highly Active and General Bifunctional Catalysts in Sustainable Cross-Coupling Reactions
-
A family of air- A nd moisture-stable dinuclear palladium complexes bearing 2-benzimidazolyl ligands is reported and shown to be a highly effective and general catalytic platform in diverse cross-coupling reactions. The rigidity and conformation of the ligand scaffold was readily modified via tethering of the 2-benzimidazolyl moiety to diamine ligands, resulting in significant changes in catalytic activity. Under optimal conditions, Suzuki, Heck, and Sonogashira-type couplings of aryl bromides can all be performed efficiently with good functional group compatibility using only 0.1 mola?% of catalyst, in aqueous or alcohol solvents. Experimental evidence highlights the importance of the bifunctional character of the ligand for catalytic activity, where the basic N-functionality in the ligand framework is proposed to accelerate (trans)metalation steps via intramolecular assistance.

- Cobalt catalyzed stereodivergent semi-hydrogenation of alkynes using H2O as the hydrogen source
-
Cobalt-catalyzed stereodivergent semi-hydrogenation of internal alkynes to alkenes is developed. The reaction proceeded through transfer hydrogenation under mild conditions using a base metal CoI2 as the catalyst, and H2O/MeOH as the hydrogen source with Zn as the reductant. The E/Z-selectivity of the product could be switched by changing the solvent and by inclusion/exclusion of a bidentate phosphine ligand (dppe). This method provides a simple and cost effective pathway for the synthesis of 1,2-dideuterioalkenes.

- Base-Controlled Heck, Suzuki, and Sonogashira Reactions Catalyzed by Ligand-Free Platinum or Palladium Single Atom and Sub-Nanometer Clusters
-
The assumption that oxidative addition is the key step during the cross-coupling reaction of aryl halides has led to the development of a plethora of increasingly complex metal catalysts, thereby obviating in many cases the exact influence of the base, which is a simple, inexpensive, and necessary reagent for this paramount transformation. Here, a combined experimental and computational study shows that the oxidative addition is not the single kinetically relevant step in different cross-coupling reactions catalyzed by sub-nanometer Pt or Pd species, since the reactivity control is shifted toward subtle changes in the base. The exposed metal atoms in the cluster cooperate to enable an extremely easy oxidative addition of the aryl halide, even chlorides, and allow the base to bifurcate the coupling. With sub-nanometer Pd species, amines drive to the Heck reaction, carbonate drives to the Sonogahira reaction, and phosphate drives to the Suzuki reaction, while for Pt clusters and single atoms, good conversion is only achieved using acetate as a base. This base-controlled orthogonal reactivity with ligand-free catalysts opens new avenues in the design of cross-coupling reactions in organic synthesis.

- Palladium-catalyzed Mizoroki-Heck reactions in water using thermoresponsive polymer micelles
-
Palladium-catalyzed Mizoroki-Heck reactions were carried out in water using thermoresponsive polymer micelles. The micelles were generated from thermoresponsive block copolymers consisting of a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) segment and a hydrophilic segment such as nonionic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (2) and anionic poly(sodium p-styrenesulfonate) (PSSNa) (9). These copolymers exhibited lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior at ca. 40–50 °C and showed thermal stimuli-induced formation and dissociation of micelles. The copolymers formed micelles in aqueous solution at higher temperature, where catalytic reactions proceeded. At lower temperature, the micelles dissociated to form a clear solution, enabling efficient extraction of the products from aqueous reaction mixture. In the presence of these copolymers, palladium complexes catalyzed the coupling reactions between aryl iodides and alkene compounds inside the hydrophobic micelle cores in water under relatively milder conditions. Extraction of the products from the aqueous solution of 2 or 9 was found to be efficient enough in comparison with conventional surfactants.

- Stereoselective Alkyne Hydrogenation by using a Simple Iron Catalyst
-
The stereoselective hydrogenation of alkynes constitutes one of the key approaches for the construction of stereodefined alkenes. The majority of conventional methods utilize noble and toxic metal catalysts. This study concerns a simple catalyst comprised of the commercial chemicals iron(II) acetylacetonate and diisobutylaluminum hydride, which enables the Z-selective semihydrogenation of alkynes under near ambient conditions (1–3 bar H2, 30 °C, 5 mol % [Fe]). Neither an elaborate catalyst preparation nor addition of ligands is required. Mechanistic studies (kinetic poisoning, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, TEM) strongly indicate the operation of small iron clusters and particle catalysts.

- Nickel-Catalyzed Stereodivergent Synthesis of E- and Z-Alkenes by Hydrogenation of Alkynes
-
A convenient protocol for stereodivergent hydrogenation of alkynes to E- and Z-alkenes by using nickel catalysts was developed. Simple Ni(NO3)2?6 H2O as a catalyst precursor formed active nanoparticles, which were effective for the semihydrogenation of several alkynes with high selectivity for the Z-alkene (Z/E>99:1). Upon addition of specific multidentate ligands (triphos, tetraphos), the resulting molecular catalysts were highly selective for the E-alkene products (E/Z>99:1). Mechanistic studies revealed that the Z-alkene-selective catalyst was heterogeneous whereas the E-alkene-selective catalyst was homogeneous. In the latter case, the alkyne was first hydrogenated to a Z-alkene, which was subsequently isomerized to the E-alkene. This proposal was supported by density functional theory calculations. This synthetic methodology was shown to be generally applicable in >40 examples and scalable to multigram-scale experiments.

- Mizoroki-Heck Cross-Coupling of Bromobenzenes with Styrenes: Another Example of Pd-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling with Potential Safety Hazards
-
The potential safety hazards associated with the Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling of bromobenzenes with styrenes were evaluated. The heat output from the reaction in various solvents was comparable in a variety of solvents; however, the rate of reaction was significantly faster in the presence of water. Thermal stability evaluation of the postreaction mixtures in DMSO and 3:1 DMSO/water by differential scanning calorimetry indicated that the onset temperatures of thermal decomposition were significantly lower than that of neat DMSO. Evaluation of the substrate scope revealed that the substitution pattern on the bromobenzene did not affect the heat output. The reaction rate of electron-deficient bromobenzenes was slower than that of the electron-rich bromobenzenes. In general, substituted styrenes afforded similar magnitudes of exotherms; however, the reaction rate of bromobenzene with 2-methylstyrene was significantly slower than the other studied styrenes. The predicted heat of reaction using the density functional theory method, B3LYP, was in good agreement with the experimental data. Such excellent agreement suggests that this calculation method can be used as a preliminary tool to predict heat of reaction and avoid exothermic reaction conditions. In many of the studied cases, the maximum temperature of a synthesis reaction was considerably higher than the solvent boiling point and thermal decomposition onset temperatures when the reaction was performed in DMSO or 3:1 DMSO/water. It is crucial to understand the thermal stability of the reaction mixture to design the process accordingly and ensure the reaction temperature is maintained below the onset temperature of decomposition to avoid potential runaway reactions.

- Oxidative and Reductive Cross-Coupling Reactions Catalyzed by an Anionic "ligandless" Palladium Complex
-
The anionic complex [NBu4][Pd(DMSO)Cl3], which can be synthesized on a gram scale in a single step starting from commercially available starting materials, has been shown to be an active catalyst in the Mizoroki-Heck reaction of aryl halides. We present two new catalytic applications of this complex: the base-free oxidative Heck reaction and the reductive homodimerization of aryl halides. This complex outperformed other palladium salts. In the latter reaction, the catalyst loading could be reduced to 0.01 mol %. The scope of the reactions has been explored, demonstrating the potential of the anionic palladium complex in these catalytic transformations.

- Dehydrative Cross-Coupling of 1-Phenylethanol Catalysed by Palladium Nanoparticles Formed in situ under Acidic Conditions
-
A dehydrative cross-coupling of 1-phenylethanol catalysed by sugar derived, in situ formed palladium(0) nanoparticles under acidic conditions is realised. The acidic conditions allow for use of alcohols as a feedstock in metal-mediated coupling reactions via their in situ dehydration and subsequent cross-coupling. Extensive analysis of the size and morphology of the palladium nanoparticles formed in situ showed that the zero-valent metal was surrounded by hydrophilic hydroxyl groups. EDX-TEM imaging studies using a prototype silicon drift detector provided insight into the problematic role of molecular oxygen in the system. This increased understanding of the catalyst deactivation allowed for the development of the cross-coupling methodology. A 250-12,000 fold increase in molar efficiency was observed when compared to related two-step protocols that use alternative feedstocks for the palladium-mediated synthesis of stilbenes. This work opens up a new research area in which the active catalyst is formed, stabilised and regenerated by a renewable sugar.

- Carbonyl–Olefin Cross-Metathesis Through a Visible-Light-Induced 1,3-Diol Formation and Fragmentation Sequence
-
A visible-light-mediated approach to carbonyl–olefin cross-metathesis is described. Photoinduced hole catalysis was used to promote the formation of 1,3-diols from aldehydes and styrenes, which were then readily fragmented under acidic conditions to form the cross-metathesis products. The use of 1,3-diols as intermediates, rather than the energetically more demanding oxetanes, provides a new, orthogonal mechanistic strategy for carbonyl–olefin cross-metathesis. Furthermore, this approach does not require any metals, ligands, or additives, and provides the products with high levels of E selectivity. A mechanistic rationale is provided and supported by both theoretical calculations and experiments. Additionally, a practical synthesis of a new acridinium-based photocatalyst, including full characterization, is presented.
