- Synthesis, Characterisation, and Determination of Physical Properties of New Two-Protonic Acid Ionic Liquid and its Catalytic Application in the Esterification
-
A new ionic liquid was synthesised, and its chemical structure was elucidated by FT-IR, 1D NMR, 2D NMR, and mass analyses. Some physical properties, thermal behaviour, and thermal stability of this ionic liquid were investigated. The formation of a two-protonic acid salt namely 4,4′-trimethylene-N,N′-dipiperidinium sulfate instead of 4,4′-trimethylene-N,N′-dipiperidinium hydrogensulfate was evidenced by NMR analyses. The catalytic activity of this ionic liquid was demonstrated in the esterification reaction of n-butanol and glacial acetic acid under different conditions. The desired acetate was obtained in 62-88 % yield without using a Dean-Stark apparatus under optimal conditions of 10 mol-% of the ionic liquid, an alcohol to glacial acetic acid mole ratio of 1.3: 1.0, a temperature of 75-100°C, and a reaction time of 4 h. α-Tocopherol (α-TCP), a highly efficient form of vitamin E, was also treated with glacial acetic acid in the presence of the ionic liquid, and O-acetyl-α-tocopherol (Ac-TCP) was obtained in 88.4 % yield. The separation of esters was conducted during workup without the utilisation of high-cost column chromatography. The residue and ionic liquid were used in subsequent runs after the extraction of desired products. The ionic liquid exhibited high catalytic activity even after five runs with no significant change in its chemical structure and catalytic efficiency.

- Facile construction of thermo-responsive Pickering emulsion for esterification reaction in phase transfer catalysis system
-
In this paper, a thermo-responsive Pickering emulsion (PE) is constructed for the esterification reaction in the phase transfer catalysis (PTC) system. Silica nanoparticle modified by alkyl polyoxyethylene ether and tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) is the highly efficient thermo-responsive Pickering emulsifier to stabilize the diisopropyl ketone-in-water emulsion. PEs can keep stable at room temperature for 3 days and demulsify only in the condition of elevated temperature and agitation, which causes the easy product separation and aqueous phase recycling. The adsorption of TBA+ and nonionic surfactant via electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding, respectively, can increase the hydrophobicity and the emulsifying capacity of silica nanoparticle. The ion-pair of TBA+ and reactant anion is generated and can be transferred into the organic phase, initiating the bond-forming reaction. The modifying effect of polyoxyethylene ether is weakened with the increase of temperature due to the loss of the hydrogen bonding interaction, resulting in the demulsification of PEs. Moreover, the cloud point of polyoxyethylene ether is the temperature for the complete separation of two phases. In this PTC system, the conversion rate for the esterification can reach to 92 % and the aqueous phase can be reused at least 5 times without sacrifice of the catalytic activity, demonstrating the potential application in industry.

- KMnO4-catalyzed chemoselective deprotection of acetate and controllable deacetylation-oxidation in one pot
-
A novel and efficient protocol for chemoselective deacetylation under ambient conditions was developed using catalytic KMnO4. The stoichiometric use of KMnO4 highlighted the dual role of a heterogeneous oxidant enabling direct access to aromatic aldehydes in one-pot sequential deacetylation-oxidation. The reaction employed an alternative solvent system and allowed the clean transformation of benzyl acetate to sensitive aldehyde in a single step while preventing over-oxidation to acids. Use of inexpensive and readily accessible KMnO4 as an environmentally benign reagent and the ease of the reaction operation were particularly attractive, and enabled the controlled oxidation and facile cleavage of acetate in a preceding step. - 4-Imidazol-1-yl-butane-1-sulfonic acid ionic liquid: Synthesis, structural analysis, physical properties and catalytic application as dual solvent-catalyst
-
4-Imidazol-1-yl-butane-1-sulfonic acid (ImBu-SO3H) has been successfully synthetized and fully characterized by FT-IR and high-resolution NMR spectroscopy (1H, 13C). The “plausible” alternative structures of ImBu-SO3H were discussed on the basis of its NMR data. The ionic liquid showed interesting dual solvent-catalyst property, which was studied experimentally for the acetylation of a variety of functionalized alcohols, phenols, thiols, amines and α-tocopherol (α-CTP) as the most active form of vitamin E with acetic anhydride and which provided good yields within a short reaction time. ImBu-SO3H was successfully recycled by product extraction with an average recovered yield of 82% for 5 subsequent runs. The catalytic activity of the recycled ImBu-SO3H showed almost no loss even after five consecutive runs.

- Manganese-mediated acetylation of alcohols, phenols, thiols, and amines utilizing acetic anhydride
-
Manganese(II) chloride-catalyzed acetylation of alcohols, phenols thiols and amines with acetic anhydride is reported. This method is environment-friendly and economically viable as it involves inexpensive, relatively benign catalyst, mild reaction condition, and simple workup. Acetylation is performed under the solvent-free condition at ambient temperature and acetylated products obtained in good to excellent yields. Primary, secondary heterocyclic amines, and phenols with various functional groups are smoothly acetylated in good yields. This method exhibits exquisite chemoselectivity, the amino group is preferentially acetylated in the presence of a hydroxyl/thiol group.

- Catalytic Cascade Access to Biaryl-2-Methyl Acetates from Pyruvate O-Arylmethyl Ketoximes via the Palladium-Catalyzed C(sp2)H Bond Arylation and C?O Bond Solvolysis
-
A catalytic cascade has been developed for the synthesis of biaryl-2-methyl acetates via a palladium-catalyzed ortho-C(sp2)?H bond arylation of pyruvate O-arylmethyl ketoximes with aryl iodides followed by a solvolysis, in which the pyruvic ketoxime ester as a new auxiliary is employed to direct the C(sp2)?H bond activation. The straightforward treatment of O-arylmethyl hydroxylamines and ethyl pyruvate with aryl iodides also provides the target products in a one-pot fashion. Furthermore, the new palladacycle intermediate is unambiguously confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. A plausible reaction pathway is proposed for the Pd-catalyzed arylation-acetolysis sequence. (Figure presented.).

- Doping of copper (I) oxide onto a solid support as a recyclable catalyst for acetylation of amines/alcohols/phenols and synthesis of trisubstituted imidazole
-
A study of copper-mediated C-heteroatom especially C-N and C-O bond formations using simpler methodologies has been carried out. In the present work, acetylation of various substrates such as amines, phenols and alcohols; synthesis of 2,4,5-trisubstituted imidazole is done using simple and easily available starting materials. Copper (I) oxide was synthesized in situ by the reduction of Fehling's solution with glucose followed by its anchoring onto different supports like silica, HAP, basic alumina and cellulose. Comparison and contrasts between the reactivity of copper (I) oxide supported onto different supports for these reactions are made. The reactivity of copper (I) oxide seems to be largely dependent on the nature of support and the most active catalyst for a particular reaction was further characterized by different spectroscopic techniques such as FTIR, XRD, TGA, XPS, SEM, TEM and AAS. The catalysts were found to be stable, easily recyclable without any significant loss in activity. Graphical abstract: Applications of solid supported copper (I) oxides (where solid support is silica, HAP, cellulose and basic alumina) are studied for various organic transformations with special emphasis on C-N and C-O bond formation reactions.[Figure not available: see fulltext.]

- Base-catalyzed retro-Claisen condensation: A convenient esterification of alcohols via C-C bond cleavage of ketones to afford acylating sources
-
The base-catalyzed esterification of alcohols via retro-Claisen condensation has been demonstrated for the first time. A variety of alcohols including aryl- and heteroaryl methanols as well as aliphatic ones underwent efficient acylation to give the ester products in reasonable to good yields upon isolation. Not only conventional 1,3-diketones but also strong electron-withdrawing group containing acetophenones could serve as the acylating suppliers. The synthetic protocol is operationally simple and adaptable to a broad substrate scope. It complements the existed esterification via the retro-Claisen condensation, and enlarges this benign synthetic methodology.

- ZnAl2O4@SiO2 nanocomposite catalyst for the acetylation of alcohols, phenols and amines with acetic anhydride under solvent-free conditions
-
A ZnAl2O4@SiO2 nanocomposite was prepared from metal nitrates and tetraethyl orthosilicate by the sol-gel process, and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, transmission electron microscopy, and N2 adsorption-desorption measurements. The nanocomposite was tested as a heterogeneous catalyst for the acetylation of alcohols, phenols, and amines under solvent-free conditions. Under optimized conditions, efficient acetylation of these substrates with acetic anhydride over the ZnAl2O4@SiO2 nanocomposite was obtained. Acetylation of anilines and primary aliphatic amines proceeded rapidly at room temperature, while the reaction time was longer for the acetylation of alcohols and phenols, showing that an amine NH2 group can be selectively acetylated in the presence of alcoholic or phenolic OH groups. The catalyst can be reused without obvious loss of catalytic activity. The catalytic activity of the ZnAl2O4@SiO2 nanocomposite was higher than that of pure ZnAl2O4. The method gives high yields, and is clean, cost effective, compatible with substrates having other functional groups and it is suitable for practical organic synthesis.

LaFeO3/SiO2 nanocomposite was synthesized by the sol-gel process from metal nitrates and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the SiO2 source. The nanocomposite product was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, and surface area measurements and was used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the efficient acetylation of amines, alcohols and phenols to the corresponding acetates using acetic anhydride under solvent-free conditions. Among the various substrates, acetylation of amines was preceded rapidly, so that an amine group could be selectively acetylated in the presence of alcoholic or phenolic hydroxyl groups by the appropriate choice of reaction time. The catalyst can also be reused several times without the loss of activity. In addition, the catalytic activity of the LaFeO3/SiO2 nanocomposite was higher than that of the pure LaFeO3 nanoparticles. Zinc aluminate (ZnAl2O4) nanoparticles with an average particle size of about 8 nm were easily prepared by the co-precipitation method using aqueous ammonia solution as the precipitating agent. This nanosized spinel-type oxide was characterized by TGA, XRD, FT-IR, TEM, and surface area measurement and used as the heterogeneous catalyst for the acetylation reaction. Efficient acetylation of various amines, alcohols and phenols was carried out over ZnAl2O4 nanoparticles using acetic anhydride and/or acetyl chloride as the acetylating agents at room temperature without the use of a solvent. The method is highly selective, allowing the alcoholic hydroxyl group to be protected while the phenolic hydroxyl group remains intact, and the amine group can be acetylated in the presence of the hydroxyl group. This method is fast and has a high yield. It is also clean, safe, cost effective, compatible with substrates that have other functional groups and very suitable for practical organic synthesis. In addition, the catalyst can be reused without significant loss of activity. Indeed, the catalytic activity of the ZnAl2O4 nanoparticles is higher than that of bulk ZnAl2O4.

A simple and efficient procedure for the preparation of silica-bonded N-propyl sulfamic acid (SBNPSA) by the reaction of 3-aminopropylsilica (1) and chlorosulfonic acid in chloroform is described. This solid acid is employed as a new catalyst for the formylation of alcohols and amines with ethyl formate under mild and heterogeneous conditions at room temperature with good to excellent yields. Also, SBNPSA catalyzed acetylation of various alcohols and amines with acetic anhydride at room temperature.

- Cerium polyoxometalate as a reusable catalyst for acetylation and formylation of alcohols
-
Efficient esterification of primary and sterically-hindered secondary or tertiary alcohols with acetic anhydride was achieved in the presence of ammonium decatungestocerate(IV) icosahydrate, (NH4)8[CeW 10O36]·OH2O, as catalyst in high yields. Primary and secondary alcohols were also converted to their corresponding acetates and formates with acetic acid and ethyl formate in the presence of this catalyst. Easy work-up, non-toxicity, reusability, and stability of the catalyst are noteworthy advantages of this method. Springer-Verlag 2004.

- Oxidation of benzylic alcohols and ethers to carbonyl derivatives by nitric acid in dichloromethane
-
Nitric acid in dichloromethane may be successfully employed for the oxidation of benzylic alcohols and ethers to the corresponding carbonyl compounds. The proposed method proved to be of general applicability, affording very good yields of aldehydes and ketones and showing interesting chemoselectivity in many instances, allowing competitive aromatic nitration to be avoided, as well as - in the case of aldehydes - any further oxidation to carboxylic acids. The reaction probably proceeds by a radical mechanism, the active species in the oxidation process being NO2. Competitive formation of nitro esters was observed in some cases, whereas poor results were obtained with allylic and non-benzylic substrates. Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. - Novel photoacid generators for photodirected oligonucleotide synthesis
-
Photodirected oligonucleotide synthesis uses either direct or indirect light-dependent 5′-deprotection. Both have been reported to give lower stepwise synthetic yields than conventional methods. The deficiency appears to be due to incomplete deprotection at the oligonucleotide 5′-position and, additionally in the case where photodirection is indirect and uses photogenerated photoacid to effect 5′-detritylation, the depurinating effects of strong acid. We have developed novel photosensitive-2-nitrobenzyl esters that on irradiation with near UV light generate α-chloro-substituted acetic acids, such as trichloroacetic acid, which are widely and successfully used in conventional solid-phase oligonucleotide synthesis. α-Phenyl-4,5-dimethoxy-2-nitrobenzyltrichloroacetate and α-phenyl-4,5-dimethoxy-2,6-dinitrobenzyltrichloroacetate showed appropriate photochemical characteristics and were used for photodirected synthesis of a variety of oligonucleotides, including (T)5, TATAT, TGTGT, (T)10, (AT)5, (CT)5 (GT)5 and (TGCAT)2 on a modified Millipore Expedite DNA synthesizer. The outcomes were compared with those obtained by use of directly added trichloroacetic acid (conventional synthesis). The stepwise yields for the two methods were essentially identical.

A variety of alcohols are acetylated and formylated efficiently with acetic acid and ethyl formate in the presence of catalytic amounts of Bi(III) salts such as BiCl3, Bi(TFA)3 and Bi(OTf)3. BiCl3 and Bi(OTf)3 are also effective catalysts for acetylation of phenols. All of these catalysts are ineffective in formylation of phenols. Selective acetylation and formylation of alcohols in the presence of phenols is an additional advantage of this procedure.

- 2'-Deoxy-2'-alkoxyaminouridines: Novel 2'-substituted uridines prepared by intramolecular nucleophilic ring opening of 2,2'-O-anhydrouridines
-
Natural and unnatural modified nucleosides and nucleotides play important roles in biology, medicine, and as biomedical research tools. Reported herein is an application of synthetic methodology developed for the stereo- and regiospecific introduction of structural modifications at the 2'-position of uridine nucleosides. A novel class of modified nucleosides, 2'-alkoxylamino-2'-deoxy uridines, are prepared by intramolecular nucleophilic addition of a 3'-tethered alkoxycarbamate nucleophile to the 2'-position with concomitant opening of a 2,2'-anhydrouridine.
