REACTION OF PHENOL WITH 1-PHENYL-1-CYCLOHEXENE IN THE PRESENCE OF ALUMINUM PHENOLATE
The reaction of phenol with 1-phenyl-1-cyclohexene in the presence of aluminum phenolate leads to 1-phenyl-1-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-, 1-phenyl-2-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-, 1-phenyl-2-(o-hydroxyphenyl)-, and 1-phenyl-3-(o-hydroxyphenyl)cyclohexanes, in which the ortho-alkylation products predominate. The products from ionic hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of the initial olefin (phenylcyclohexane and biphenyl) and a small amount of the products from the cleavage of the phenyl(hydroxyphenyl)cyclohexanes are also formed.
