In the present study, we have designed and synthesized a new magnetically recoverable, nanocatalyst of Ag/Fe3O4?starch. The successful synthesis and the structure of the nanocatalyst were confirmed and evaluated with several analytical techniques including XRD, EDX, VSM, FT-IR, TEM and TGA. The impact and efficiency of Ag/Fe3O4?starch were successfully investigated in the one-pot synthesis of desired 4H-pyrans and tetrahydro-4H-chromenes using three-component condensation of various aldehydes, malononitrile, and 1,3-diketoesters or cyclic 1,3-diketones. The magnetic nanocatalyst was easily recovered and reused with high catalytic activity even after up to five runs.

Mesoporous Ca-MCM catalysts were prepared using a mixture of CaCO3, TEOS, cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), triethanolamine (TEA), ethanol and H2O. Three catalysts with different CaCO3 contents, M-Ca 1?%, M-Ca 5?% and M-Ca 10?%, respectively, were prepared and characterized by N2 physisorption, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, TPD-CO2 and Pyridine-FTIR. A green and simple protocol was developed for the synthesis of 6-amino-4H-pyran scaffolds through a multicomponent coupling reaction of an aldehyde, malononitrile, and 1,3-dicarbonyl compound in different reaction solvents. This procedure was performed at room temperature (20?°C), obtaining good and excellent yields of 4H-pyran derivatives. The mesoporous materials are insoluble in polar media, which allows easy removal of the reaction products without affecting their catalytic activity. The leaching test showed an excellent stability, and Ca-MCM catalysts can be used three times without appreciable loss of their catalytic activity.

An efficient and recyclable homogeneous catalyst is developed using commercially cheap L-proline and melamine for the synthesis of chromenes and spirochromenes (spirooxindoles) via multicomponent reactions at room temperature. Systematic studies were conducted in order to achieve desired reactivity and recyclability of the catalyst using various α-amino acids and aromatic amines as donor-acceptor pairs. Among the screened combinations, L-proline and melamine (3:1 ratio; 3 mol% on total weight) was found to be best catalyst to give the desired products with excellent yields (up to 99%) in very short times (1–15 min) at room temperature in DMSO as solvent. The catalyst was recovered by adding EtOAc and reused up to 5 cycles without losing the catalytic activity.

A novel magnetic polyaniline (PANI)/Fe3O4/Ag nanocomposite was successfully synthesized via in situ polymerization induced by ultraviolet irradiation (λ = 254 nm) in the presence of Fe3O4 nanoparticles and Ag cations as oxidants. The morphology and structure of the newly prepared nanocomposite was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, vibrating sample magnetometry, transmission electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The corresponding saturation magnetization for the nanocomposite was about 20.37 emu g-1. The catalytic properties of the nanocomposite were evaluated in the synthesis of biologically and pharmaceutically important pyran derivatives and it was shown to produce high yields, short reaction times and an easy work-up process. The superparamagnetic properties of the nanocatalyst allowed easy separation from the reaction media.

A variety of 4H-chromenes, benzochromenes, 4,5-dihydropyrano[3,2-c]chromenes, 4H-pyran-3-carboxylates, and 3,4-disubstituted isoxazol-5(4H)-ones have been synthesized in high yields by using potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP) as an inexpensive, commercially available catalyst. It was found that the three-component tandem reaction enabled synthesis of pyran-annulated heterocycles in water at 50 °C. 3,4-Disubstituted isoxazol-5(4H)-ones were synthesized by use of 10 mol% KHP in water at room temperature. Also, treatment of methylene-containing compounds (malononitrile or ethyl cyanoacetate) with aromatic aldehydes in the presence of 5 mol% KHP resulted in α,β-unsaturated nitriles. The procedure is an easily performed, straightforward method for synthesis of a variety of pyran-annulated compounds, isoxazol-5(4H)-one-containing heterocycles, and Knoevenagel adducts. The reaction is safe, uses mild conditions, and is environmentally benign. Other notable advantages are reuse of the catalyst, no use of hazardous organic solvents, and ease of work-up.
