- Halogen-Lithium Exchange of Sensitive (Hetero)aromatic Halides under Barbier Conditions in a Continuous Flow Set-Up
-
A halogen-lithium exchange reaction of (hetero)aromatic halides performed in the presence of various electrophiles such as aldehydes, ketones, Weinreb amides, and imines using BuLi as exchange reagent and a commercially available flow set-up is reported. The organolithiums generated in situ were instantaneously trapped with various electrophiles (Barbier conditions) resulting in the formation of polyfunctional (hetero)arenes. This method enables the functionalization of (hetero)arenes containing highly sensitive functional groups such as esters, which are not tolerated in batch conditions.

- Rhodium-Catalyzed Deoxygenation and Borylation of Ketones: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Investigation
-
The rhodium-catalyzed deoxygenation and borylation of ketones with B2pin2 have been developed, leading to efficient formation of alkenes, vinylboronates, and vinyldiboronates. These reactions feature mild reaction conditions, a broad substrate scope, and excellent functional-group compatibility. Mechanistic studies support that the ketones initially undergo a Rh-catalyzed deoxygenation to give alkenes via boron enolate intermediates, and the subsequent Rh-catalyzed dehydrogenative borylation of alkenes leads to the formation of vinylboronates and diboration products, which is also supported by density functional theory calculations.

- Alkylation of Aldehyde (Arenesulfonyl)hydrazones with Trialkylboranes
-
(Arenesulfonyl)hydrazone derivatives of aryl aldehydes are readily alkylated by trialkylboranes in the presence of base to generate new organoboranes that may be converted to the corresponding substituted alkanes or alcohols depending upon the reaction conditions chosen. Both tosyl- and trisylhydrazone derivatives can be utilized in the reaction, which tolerates a variety of functional groups, making it a versatile alternative to both the Grignard and Suzuki-coupling reactions.

- Carbon-Carbon Bond-Forming Reactions Using Cerium Metal or Organocerium(III) Reagents
-
Carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions using cerium metal or organocerium(III) reagents have been investigated.Cerium amalgam is an effective reagent for the chemoselective preparation of homoallylic alcohols from allyl halides and carbonyl compounds. These same reagent can also be satisfactorily employed for the Reformatsky-type reaction of α-halo esters with carbonyl compounds. It has been shown that organocerium(III) reagents are conveniently generated by the reaction of organolithiums with cerium(III)iodide or cerium(III)chloride. The reagents are less basic thanorganolithiums or Grignard reagents, and they react cleanly at -78 to -65 deg C with various carbonyl compounds to afford the addition products in high yields, even though the substrates are susceptible to enolization or metal-halogen exchange with simple organolithiums. The same reagents react also with α,β-unsaturated compounds to yield 1,2-addition products in high selectivity.
