Uses

Calcium stearate (CAS NO.1592-23-0) is used in the concrete industry for efflorescence control of cementious products used in the production of concrete masonry units i.e. paver and block, as well as waterproofing. In plastics, calcium stearate can act as an acid scavenger, a lubricant and a release agent. It may be used in plastic colorant concentrates to improve pigment wetting. In rigid PVC, it can accelerate fusion, improve flow and reduce die swell. In the paper industry, calcium stearate is used as a lubricant to provide good gloss, preventing dusting and fold cracking in paper and paperboard making.

Production

Calcium stearate (CAS NO.1592-23-0) is made by the action of the sodium salts of the acids on a soluble calcium salt such as calcium chloride (CaCl2).

Consensus Reports

First Aid Measures :
Ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting. If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid if irritation or symptoms occur.
Inhalation: Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid if cough or other symptoms appear.
Skin: Flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical aid if irritation develops or persists. Wash clothing before reuse.
Eyes: Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. If irritation develops, get medical aid.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances. Keep containers tightly closed.
Handling: Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Use with adequate ventilation. Minimize dust generation and accumulation. May form flammable dust-air mixtures. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Avoid ingestion and inhalation.
