Uses

 Copper dinitrate (CAS NO.3251-23-8) is an effective reagent for nitration of aromatic compounds in combination with acetic anhydride. Hydrated copper nitrate absorbed onto clay affords a reagent called "Claycop". The resulting blue-colored clay is used as a slurry, for example for the oxidation of thiols to disulfides. Claycop is also used to convert dithioacetals to carbonyls. A related reagent based on Montmorillonite has proven useful for the nitration of aromatic compounds. Copper dinitrate is also used in medicine, as an insecticide, in chemical analysis, in making light sensitive papers.

Production

 Copper dinitrate forms when copper metal is treated with N2O4:
Cu + 2 N2O4 → Cu(NO3)2 + 2 NO
 Hydrated copper nitrate can be made by hydrolysis of the anhydrous material or by treating copper metal with an aqueous solution of silver nitrate or concentrated nitric acid:
Cu + 4 HNO3 → Cu(NO3)2 + 2 H2O + 2 NO2

Moderately toxic by ingestion. A severe eye and skin irritant. Potentially explosive reaction above 220°C with ammonium or potassium hexacyanoferrate(II). Reaction with ammonia + potassium amide gives explosive product. Violent reaction with acetic anhydride. May ignite on prolonged contact with paper. Concentrated solutions may ignite in contact with tin or aluminum foil. Used as a fungicide, herbicide, and as a catalyst component in solid rocket fuel.  Copper dinitrate (CAS NO.3251-23-8) is also named as Caswell No. 246 ; Claycop ; Copper(2+) nitrate ; Copper(II) nitrate ; Cupric dinitrate ; Cupric nitrate ; EPA Pesticide Chemical Code 076102 ; HSDB 264 ; Nitric acid, copper(2+) salt ; UNII-9TC879S2ZV . Copper dinitrate (CAS NO.3251-23-8) is blue crystalline solid. It is soluble in water. Toxic oxides of nitrogen are produced in fires involving Copper dinitrate. Mixtures of Copper dinitrate with alkyl esters may explode, owing to the formation of alkyl nitrates. Mixtures with phosphorus, tin(II) chloride or other reducing agents may react explosively. A finely divided mixture of potassium ferrocyanide and Copper dinitrate exploded when dried at 220°C. It is noncombustible, but Copper dinitrate will accelerate the burning of combustible materials. If large quantities of the material are involved in a fire or the material is finely divided, an explosion may result. Prolonged exposure to fire or heat may result in an explosion.  Inhalation causes irritation of throat and lungs. Ingestion of large amounts causes violent vomiting and purging, intense pain, collapse, coma, convulsions, and paralysis. Solutions can irritate eyes. Contact with solid causes severe eye surface injury and skin irritation.
