Properties:
Mp 208–211C. Insoluble in water; soluble in hot benzene.
Derivation:
Condensing phthalic anhydride and chlorobenzene in the presence of anhydrous aluminum chloride to form p-chlorobenzoylbenzoic acid. Ring closure of the intermediate acid is brought about by heating in sulfuric acid solution.
Use:
Starting material for certain vat dyes.
