    A compound whose molecules have the ring structure characteristic of benzene, naphthalene, phenanthrene, anthracene, etc., (i.e., either the 6-carbon ring of benzene or the condensed 6-carbon rings of the other aromatic derivatives). For example, an aryl group may be phenyl C6H5 or naphthyl C10H9. Such groups are often represented in formulas by “R.”See Alkyl.
