Any of a number of chemical compounds used in some phase of textile processing. They may be classified as follows: (1) fats, oils, and waxes; (2) starches, gums, and glues (sizing); (3) soaps and detergents; (4) inorganic chemicals (bleaching, mercerizing); (5) organic solvents; (6) special-purpose products (flameproofing, mildew-proofing, repellent and decorative coatings, and permanent-press resins). They are sometimes also called assistants.
