Electromagnetic Separation

    Name:
    Electromagnetic Separation
    Detailed information:
Separation of isotopes, especially those of uranium, by first accelerating them by means of an electrostatic field and then passing them through a magnetic field. The effect of this is to cause all the particles to take a curved path; the heavier ones, having higher kinetic energy, describe a wider arc than the lighter ones. Thus, two isotopes of closely similar masses can be separated and collected.See Mass Spectrometry; Magnetic Separation.
