    Properties:
    Smoky-gray, brownish, blackish or dull yellowish in color; waxy to greasy luster. Mohs hardness 6.5–7, d 2.60–2.65. More easily soluble in hot caustic alkali than is crystallized quartz.

    Europe, U.S.
     
    Use:
    Abrasive; balls for ball mills; paint extender; filler for fertilizer, insecticides, rubber, plastics, and road asphalt; ceramics; chemical tower packing.
