    (1917– ). An American born in Taunton, Massachusetts who won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 2001 for his pioneering work concerning chirally catalysed hydrogenation reactions. He was awarded an undergraduate degree from Harvard and worked many years for the Monsanto Corporation. Knowles received the ACS Award for Creative Invention 1982.
