    A natural fiber secreted as a continuous filament by the silkworm, Bombyx mori; silk consists essentially of the protein fibroin and, in the raw state, is coated with a gum that is usually removed before spinning. D 1.25, elongation at rupture about 20%, tenacity 3–5 g/denier. Combustible but self-extinguishing.
