Ferric chloride hexahydrate Specification

Ferric chloride hexahydrate is chemical compound with the formula FeCl3.6(H2O). Its IUPAC name is called iron(3+) trichloride hexahydrate. With the CAS register number 10025-77-1, this chemical is stable, but incompatible with strong oxidizing agents. Ferric chloride hexahydrate can form explosive mixtures with sodium and potassium. The substance is yellow solid.

Physical properties about Ferric chloride hexahydrate are: Ferric chloride hexahydrate is soluble in water, alchol and diethyl ether with the melting point of 37 °C and boling point of 280 °C. The solution is acidic which can concrete protein. This chemical is hygroscopic and will convert into red brown liquid in the air.

Preparation of Ferric chloride hexahydrate: In industry, hydrochloric acid reacts with scrap iron in the reactor to genereate ferrous chloride solution, which is defecated to react with chlorine gas and form ferric trichloride solution. And then, the crude mixture is purified, filtered and dried to gain the end product of Ferric chloride hexahydrate.
Fe + 2 HCl → FeCl2 + H2O
2 FeCl2 + C12 → 2 FeCl3

Uses of Ferric chloride hexahydrate: Ferric chloride hexahydrate can be used as accessorysubstance (fortifier of iron) and for babies milk and ablactational food. In addition, this chemical is also used as water treatment agent, corrodent in printing plate, oxidant and mordant in dye chemistry. Meanwhile, it is used in organic synthesis and pharmaceutical industry.
