solid state and in CH3CN at 298 K display a band at 484 and 513 nm,
respectively (Figs. S5 and S6, respectively). These bands are assigned
as derived from the charge-transfer excited state coming from the
promotion of a lone pair electron on NMe2 group to the π* orbital of
the naphthalene ring of the dansylimido ligand.

In summary, mono-, di-, and tri-nuclear gold(I) complexes with
dansyl group have been synthesized, and the crystal structures of 2
and 3 have been studied. The “gilded” dansylamides, complexes 1–3,
show intense luminescence both in the solid state and in fluid
solutions at 298 K. The origin for the emission bands of 1 and 3 as well
as the high-energy emission band of 2 in the solid state at 298 K is
assigned to be derived from the charge-transfer excited state arising
from a lone pair of NMe2 group to the π* orbital of naphthalene ring of
the dansylamido or dansylimido ligand. The low-energy emission
band of 2 at 590 nm is tentatively assigned to come from the excited
state associated with the excimer formation.
