General procedure for reductive N-formylation of quinolines to
FTHQs.
Iridium catalyst (0.005 mmol Ir), quinolines (0.5 mmol) were placed in a
25 mL Schlenk tube, followed by the addition HCOOH/HCOONa aqueous
solution aqueous solution of the given pH (5 mL). The reaction mixture
was stirred at the designated temperature for 24 hours. After completion
of the reaction, the reaction mixture was cooled to the room temperature
and quenched with saturated sodium carbonate solution. The aqueous
solution was extracted with ethyl acetate (3ⅹ5 mL) and the combined
organic layers were washed with saturated sodium chloride (10 mL). The
organic layer was collected and dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate. The
crude product was purified by column chromatography (ethyl acetate/
petroleum ether = from 1/10 to 1/1).

Kinetic experiments of Ir/Si and Ir/L
The reactions were carried out according to the general procedures for
the transformation of quinoline to THQ or FTHQ. quinoline (0.5 mmol)
was added and the reaction mixture was stirred at the 80oC for designated
time and quenched with saturated sodium carbonate solution. The
conversion and yields were determined by 1H NMR spectra.
Recycling experiments of Ir/Si
The reactions were carried out according to the general procedures for
the transformation of quinoline to THQ or FTHQ. Quinoline (1 mmol) was
added and the first run reaction was carried out, respectively. After
completion of the reaction, the Ir/Si was separated by centrifugation and
washed with CH2Cl2 and water, and then dried under vacuum. The
recovered catalyst was used for consecutive reactions under the same
condition.
