procedure for the synthesis of enantiopure, stereo-
defined fluorohydrins, but its course is strongly depen-
dent on the nature of the substrate. In any case, the
fluoro alcohols obtained by this procedure are extremely
pure from both the regiochemical and the stereochemi-
cal point of view. Among them, 5j–l, containing a dual
fluorine marker are currently being elaborated into new
reagents for the fast and reliable 19F NMR based
determination of enantiomeric excesses.

12. General procedure: To a solution of epoxide (0.833 mmol)
in dichloromethane under nitrogen atmosphere was added
boron trifluoride–diethyl ether complex (0.039 mL,
33% mol) and the mixture was stirred for the indicated
time and temperature (Table 1). Then, aqueous work-up
(satd NaHCO3), extraction, and purification by column
chromatography allowed the isolation of the target fluoro
alcohols in good yield. All new compounds have been fully
characterized by spectroscopic and analytical methods.
