The adsorption of (Ϫ)-ephedrine was demonstrated by qualit-
ative circular dichroism experiments: the addition of Pd/C to
an acetonitrile solution of 13 brought about a decrease in its
initial positive absorption (λmax ϭ 253, 260 and 267 nm).
Whatever the amount of the catalyst introduced, we always ob-
served weaker signals in solution, meaning an equilibrium be-
tween free and adsorbed species. This phenomenon was also

The hydrogenation of 8 in methanol resulted in a mixture of
14, 15 and 2-benzyltetraline, the latter arising from hydro-
genolysis of 14 and 15. For comparison, see a description of
the heterogeneous hydrogenation of tetralone derivatives in: R.

After the submission of this article, the enantioselective reduc-
tion of compound 1 in the presence of supported palladium
modified by proline was reported; ee values were not higher
