It was noted that β-CDPU resin did not suffer from extensive mechan-
ical degradation and was quantitatively recovered simply by filtration and
washing with water and methanol. It could be reused for several times.
After the success of this first set of nucleophilic substitution reaction
catalyzed by β-CDPU resin in water, the reaction was extended to other
anion. Thus, various benzylic halides were treated with azide anion
under the optimized reaction condition for cyanide anion (Scheme 3).
The results are summarized in Table 2, which indicate that the de-
sired products were formed in high yields and no side products were
observed.

A safe, cost effective and easy to operate method for the preparation
of benzyl cyanides and azides in water has been developed. β-CDPU,
which is easily available, has good stability with excellent complexing
properties and high catalytic activity, was demonstrated to be a good
alternative to the more sophisticated crown ethers as a catalyst in
solid–liquid phase-transfer reactions. Extension of this study to use
this method in organic transformations is currently underway and
will be reported in due course.
