The nitro analogues 3 and 6 were the most potent compounds
of the series. Compounds 3, 4, 5 and 6 have been characterized as
agents with clear relaxant effects on isolated rat aorta, although
further studies are needed to determine the mechanisms
underlying such activity. These benzimidazole compounds
showed good and greater potency and, therefore, a promising
future lead optimization as antihypertensive agents. In conclu-
sion, we have designed and synthesized some 2-(o, p-substituted
phenyl)benzimidazole compounds with relaxant activity using
readily available and inexpensive reagents.
