Preparation and uses of Iodine trichloride: It can be prepared by reacting iodine with an excess of liquid chlorine at -70 °C. The equation is as follows: I2Cl6 ⇔ ICl2+ + ICl4-. And it can be created by heating a mixture of liquid iodine and chlorine gas to 105 °C. In addition, potassium chlorooate can react with iodine in the presence of hydrochloric acid to give this chemical. The reaction temperature should be below 45 °C. After the reaction, you can get the desired product by means of cooling, filtration, crystallization, recrystallization and drying. The equation is as follows: KClO3 + I2 + 6HCl → 2ICl + KCl + 3H2O. And it can be used as a reagent which can determine iodine value. Moreover, it can be used as disinfectant, oxidant, chlorinated agent and preservative.
