Uses
Iron oxide red (CAS NO.1309-37-1) occurs naturally and is often used as a red pigment employed in paints and primers, as well as in rubber formulation. Because of durability, the iron oxide pigments are used in barn and freight car paints. The synthetic pigment is made by heating iron sulfate. It are often used in magnetic storage, for example in the magnetic layer of floppy disks. It is used in the production of pure iron in a blast furnace. It is also used in an extremely exothermic reaction called a thermite reaction. 2 Al + Fe2O3 → 2 Fe + Al2O3It can be used as contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging. It can also be used as polishing paste.
