1. Introduction of L-Serine (CAS NO.: 56-45-1)

L-Serine (L-Ser), classified as a nonessential amino acid occurring in natural form as the L-isomer, is the form of serine which is used in protein synthesis and is readily assimilated by the digestive system, and it can not be synthesized in the human and animal body. And please notice that very high serine levels may cause immune suppression and psychological symptoms such as cerebral allergies.

As to its usage, L-Serine has very wide application in many fields. Firstly, L-Serine applies in medicine which has very important impact to overall physical and mental health. Needed for funcioning in brain and central nervous system, this product plays a role in cell growth and development (cellular proliferation) and it could also help build the phospholipids needed to produce cells in the body, eg, it could be used in the treatment for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFIDS). And then L-Serine is also involved in muscle formation, RNA and DNA function, fat and fatty acid metabolism and the maintenance of a healthy immune system and then the biosynthesis of Purines; Pyrimidines; and other amino acids.

Secondly, L-Serine is also widely applied in food. Few lysine could help to promote cerebrum growth, body strengthening and intelligence improvement. Thirdly, L-Serine could work in feed. This product could enhance organism resistance to disease promote growth, strengthen animals appetite and then increase the output capacity of lean meat. What's more, L-Serine could be used as the biochemical reagents, food additives, accessorysubstance (eg. skin nutrition additives in cosmetic) and the natural moisturizing agent in some cosmetics and skin care products.

2. Basic Information of L-Serine (CAS NO.: 56-45-1)

1). General Knowledge of L-Serine

L-Serine, with its CAS registry number 56-45-1, has other names like (S)-2-Amino-3-hydroxypropanoic acid. With its chemical formula of C3H7NO3 and molecular weight of 105.09, it is a kind of crystalline powder with slightly sweet taste. This chemical has the EINECS registry number of 200-274-3 and it belongs to the product categories which include Amino Acid Derivatives; Serine [Ser, S]; alpha-Amino Acids; Amino Acids; Biochemistry; Nutritional Supplements; L-Amino Acids; Amino Acids; GABA/Glycine receptor. Besides, L-Serine is stable in normal temperature and pressure and incompatible with strong oxidizing agents while freely soluble in water. When you are store it, it should be kept sealed in a cool, dry area protected from light.

2). Properties of L-Serine

The other characteristics of L-Serine can be summarized as: (1)ACD/BCF (pH 5.5): 1; (2)ACD/BCF (pH 7.4): 1; (3)ACD/KOC (pH 5.5): 1; (4)ACD/KOC (pH 7.4): 1; (5)#H bond acceptors: 4; (6)#H bond donors: 4; (7)#Freely Rotating Bonds: 4; (8)Polar Surface Area: 83.55; (9)Index of Refraction: 1.519; (10)Molar Refractivity: 22.541 cm3; (11)Molar Volume: 74.241 cm3; (12)Polarizability: 8.936×10-24cm3; (13)Surface Tension: 72.254 dyne/cm; (14)Density: 1.416 g/cm3; (15)Flash Point: 192.582 °C; (16)Enthalpy of Vaporization: 74.557 kJ/mol; (17)Boiling Point: 394.822 °C at 760 mmHg.

3).Manufacture of L-Serine

1. L-serine is manufactured by fermentation from carbohydrate sources: Prepare the raw material of the intermediate of DL-serine: DL-2 oxo-oxazolidine-4-carboxylic acid (DL-OOC), and then use L-OOC from testosterone pseudomonas to have hydrolytic enzyme or OOC from Bacillus subtilis to have racemase, and finally you could get L-serine through the two ways.
2. L-serine could be synthesized from GLYCINE or THREONINE.

4). Safety Information of L-Serine

When you are dealing with L-Serine, you should be careful and take some measures to protect yourself from danger. Being irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin, this chemical may cause inflammation to the skin or other mucous membranes. Therefore, you should wear suitable protective clothing and then avoid contacting with skin and eyes. And if in case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.
