Poison by ingestion, intraperitoneal, intraduodenal, intravenous, and subcutaneous routes. Human systemic effects: metabolic acidosis, pulse rate increase. An experimental teratogen. Mutation data reported. When heated to decomposition it emits very toxic fumes of NO_x and HCl. See also PAPAVERINE.
