Specification

The Silane, tetrachloro- with CAS registry number of 10026-04-7 is also known as Siliconchloride. The IUPAC name is Tetrachlorosilane. Its EINECS registry number is 233-054-0. In addition, the formula is Cl4Si and the molecular weight is 169.89. This chemical is a colourless or light yellow fuming liquid and it reacts violently with water. Besides, it is incompatible with water, acids, bases, alcohols, alkali metals, organics, powdered metals. It is stable at normal temperature and pressure, and it should be sealed in ventilated, cool, dry place away from fire. This chemical is used for the preparation of organic silicon, silicic acid ester, organic silicon oil, high temperature insulation, silicone, silicone rubber. What's more, it also can be used to absorb moisture and create a smokescreen agent.

Preparation of Silane, tetrachloro-. Firstly, ferrosilicon is added into chlorination furnace and heated to 300 °C. Crude silicon tetrachloride is obtained by condensation after chlorine is passed into mixture to react. Secondly, crude product is mixed with antimony powder for distillation for 30 minutes. At last, industrial grade product is obtained by collecting the distillate at the temperature of 56-59 °C and high-purity product can be generated by further distillation.

Si + 2 C12 → SiCl4
