Product Category of Sodium sulfide (CAS NO.1313-82-2): Inorganics;Inorganic Chemicals;Catalysis and Inorganic Chemistry;Metal and Ceramic Science
Uses
Sodium sulfide (CAS NO.1313-82-2) is used in the manufacture of dyes and sulfide ore flotation agents, and is also used in the manufacture of depilatory cream, paper cooking agent, etc.
Production
Industrially Sodium sulfide (CAS NO.1313-82-2) is produced by reduction of Na2SO4 with carbon, in the form of coal:
Na2SO4 + 4 C → Na2S + 4 CO
In the laboratory, the anhydrous salt can be prepared by reduction of sulfur with sodium in anhydrous ammonia. Alternatively, sulfur can be reduced by sodium in dry THF with a catalytic amount of naphthalene:
2 Na + S → Na2S

Safety Profile
A poison by ingestion and intraperitoneal routes. Flammable when exposed to heat or flame. Unstable and can explode on rapid heating or percussion. Reacts violently with carbon, diazonium salts, n,n-dichloromethylamine, o-nitroaniline diazonium salt, water. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of SOx and Na2O. See also SULFIDES.
