TITANIUM DICHLORIDE Chemical Properties

The molecular formula of  TITANIUM DICHLORIDE is Cl2Ti.

Its molecular weight is about 118.81.And the density of it is 3.13 g/cm3.Melting point is about 1035 °C,boiling point is about 1500°C .TITANIUM DICHLORIDE has the appearance of  black crystals or red-brown solid.
More important, the hazard symbols are that it is flammable, may have dangerous fire risks and can ignite in air .So TITANIUM DICHLORIDE must be stored under water or inert gas.The Ti(II) centers are octahedrally coordinated to six chloride ligands.

TITANIUM DICHLORIDE Uses

TITANIUM DICHLORIDE can used as decomp by water and sol in alc, almost insol in chloroform, ether, carbon disulfide. Ti(II) is a strong reducing agent.

TITANIUM DICHLORIDE Production

Molecular complexes are known such as TiCl2, where chel is DMPE  ((CH3)2PCH2CH2P(CH3)2 and TMEDA ((CH3)2NCH2CH2N(CH3)2).The reduction of related Ti(III) and Ti(IV) complexes can prepare certain species.

Na2TiCI4 is a solid-state derivative of TiCl2. And Na2TiCI4 has been prepared by the reaction of Ti metal with TiCl3 in a NaCl flux. This species adopts a linear chain structure, whereas the Ti(II) centers are octahedral with terminal, axial halides.

TITANIUM DICHLORIDE Safety Profile

Ignites spontaneously in air. Violent reaction with water liberates explosive hydrogen gas. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of Cl. See also TITANIUM COMPOUNDS.
