Tritolyl phosphate Chemical Properties

Molecular formula: C21H21O4P
Molar mass :368.37 g/mole
TRITOLYL PHOSPHATE,often abbreviated TCP,it's Melting point is about -40 °C;Boiling point is 240-255 °C.INSOLUBLE in water.it is colourless viscous liquid when pure, but commercial samples are typically yellow.

Tritolyl phosphate Uses

Tricresyl phosphate can be used as a plasticizer in nitrocellulose, varnishes, acrylate lacquers, and in polyvinyl chloride.
It is a flame retardant in plastics and rubbers.
It is used as a gasoline additive as a lead scavenger for tetra-ethyl lead.
It is a hydraulic fluid and a heat exchange medium. Exploiting its hydrophobic properties, it is used in waterproofing of materials. It is a solvent for extractions, a solvent for nitrocellulose and other polymers.
It is also used as an AW additive and EP additive in lubricants, and in hydraulic fluids.
As a gasoline additive, it helps preventing engine misfires.

Tritolyl phosphate Production

TRITOLYL PHOSPHATE is a derived from cresol and phosphoric acid. can be manufactured by reaction of cresols with phosphorus oxychloride:

OPCl3 + 3 HOC6H4CH3 → OP(OC6H4CH3)3 + 3 HCl

RTECS : TD0175000
TRITOLYL PHOSPHATE(TCP) is a known neurotoxin and is of “toxicological importance” and has been responsible for many deaths. The most serious incident arose in the 1920s when it was used as an adulterant for Jamaican ginger.

Tritolyl phosphate Consensus Reports

Reported in EPA TSCA Inventory.

Tritolyl phosphate Safety Profile

Moderately toxic by ingestion and skin contact. Human systemic effects by ingestion: flaccid paralysis without anesthesia, motor activity changes, and muscle weakness. An experimental teratogen. Experimental reproductive effects. An eye and skin irritant. Combustible. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of POx.
