Safety Profile
The whole plant contains toxic calcium oxalate raphides. Chewing any part of the plant results in burning pain in the lips, mouth, and throat, possibly followed by inflammation and blistering. Systemic effects are usually not seen because of the insolubility of calcium oxalate, however, ingestion may cause inflammation of the stomach and intestines. See also OXALATES.
