The method of synthesis is described for 4-nitrophenylethyl nitrate [1081-79-4], 2,4-dinitrophenylethyl nitrate [29627-24-5], and 2,6-dinitrophenylethyl nitrate [29627-25-6]. Polarograms are also shown for 4-nitrophenylethanol [100-27-6] and 2,4-dinitrophenylethanol [4836-69-5]. The E1/2 values and diffusion coeff. (Kd) are presented for these compds. and, in comparison, for compds. obtained under the same conditions, i.e. nitrobenzene [98-95-3], dinitrobenzene [25154-54-5], and 1,4-dinitrobenzene [100-25-4]. A comparison of the Kd of the mono- and dinitro compds. allows one to make certain conclusions concerning the effect of substituents on the Kd and the mechanism of electrochem. redn. of these compds.

The structure was ascertained by IR, UV, 1H and 13C NMR, mass spectroscopy, and x-ray crystallog.There are some commonly used reagents with their cas registry numbers 100-27-6 and 88057-15-2 in this article. I was also prepd. by independent synthesis from an o-nitrobenzoate. Another novel transformation uncovered was the conversion of o-nitrostyrene oxide to 2-(o-nitrophenyl)ethanol with use of KOH and 18-crown-6. Similar chem. was insignificant with p-nitrostyrene oxide. The benzisoxazolone exhibited antibacterial and antileukemic activity in vitro. .
