The 1st reactor effluent contains 350% I and is added to a 2nd recycling reactor, where the recycle ratio is and the reaction temp. 100-200°. The 2nd reactor effluent, contg. 375% I, is led to a nonrecycling reactor at 100-240°, and the product purified by fractional distn. The acrolein may have a H2O content of ￡7%, and contains a polymn. inhibitor. I is a useful chem. intermediate in the manuf. of epoxy resins, fragrances, and pharmaceuticals. Thus, into the 1st reactor 317 g 96% acrolein (contg. 0.3% hydroquinone as polymn. inhibitor) and 307 g 99% butadiene were fed per h, and, with recycling, the av. residence time was 5.5 h, the temp. in the loop reactor 130°, in the after reactor 150°, and the pressure was 25 bars. The effluent from the 2nd reactor contained 77.5% I, while the after reactor produced 92.5% I with a polymer content of 2.3%. The ratio of fresh feed to recycle was ~1:25.
