DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) In order to understand the behavior of active centers in the anionic oligomerization and polymn. of 2-vinylpyridine [100-69-6], the thermodn. of the intramol. coordination of the counterion by the penultimate pyridine ring was studied through a proton transfer reaction between 1,3-bis(2-pyridyl) butane (I) [15937-75-4] and the Li [60900-48-3], Na [60900-48-3], and K [75464-48-1] salts of 2-ethylpyridine carbanions in THF. The entropy values were consistent with the displacement of 31 solvent mol. from the solvation shell of the counterion by the penultimate pyridine ring upon complexation. A 13C NMR detn. of the E-Z ratios in the carbanions of 2-ethylpyridine, I, and 1,3,5-tris(2-pyridyl)hexane with a Li counterion indicated that the E-Z ratio may be 1:1 in the polymeric system, since the value appears to level off at degree of oligomerization 2. Since E-Z isomerism in the intermediate cation is kinetically detd., the only way the E form may produce the Z form is through monomer addn. 75464-49-2 and 60900-48-3 are just another two chemicals used in this study. in the propagation step. .
