Phosphonic esterification takes place only in the presence of a b-COOH function and appears as a necessary condition for the crosslinking ability, provided that enough carboxylic esterification can take place. Cyclic five-membered anhydrides are proposed as reaction intermediates but only carboxylic anhydrides could be evidenced. .
