DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 78 (Inorganic Chemicals and Reactions) Section cross-reference(s): 65 Na2[PtCl4] reacted with PPh(CF3)2 (L) in EtOH to give trans-PtL2Cl2 which reacted with AgNO3 in Me2CO to give trans-PtL2(NO3)2. trans-PtL12Cl2 (L1 = PPh2CF3, PPh3) reacted with AgNO3 to give Pt12(NO3)2. The electronic structures were calcd. for [PtL2Cl3]- (L2 = PMe3, PMe2(CF3), PMe(CF3)2, P(CF3)3, PEt3, PEt(CF3)2, PPhMe2 and PPh(CF3)2) and L by the CNDO method. During complexation significant transfer of electron d. occurs from the ligand to the metal, decreasing with an increase in the no. of CF3 groups on the phosphine. The ionization potential of the phosphines increased with increase no. of CF3 groups. These results are used to explain the tendency of PPh3-x(CF3)x in Pt complexes toward thermal oxidn. .
