- Laboratory studies on the control of Sclerotium cepivorum Berk., the incitant of white rot disease on onion in A.R.E.. Ali, A. A. (Agric. Res. Cent., Minist. Agric., Cairo, Egypt). Agric. Res. Rev., 54(2), 53-63 (English) 1976. CODEN: AGRRAA. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 5 (Agrochemicals) All fungicides tested in the lab. showed a toxic effect on fungal growth. Benlate (I) [17804-35-2] and topsin (II) [23564-06-9] at 10 ppm, Allisan (III) [99-30-9] at 50 ppm and calogran [10112-91-1] at 100 ppm checked the mycelial growth of S. cepivorum, whereas terraclor [82-68-8] did not give complete inhibition. Sclerotia were not produced at 10 ppm I, II, and terraclor, whereas allisan at 100 ppm, and calogran at 200 ppm. The antibiotics griseofulvin [126-07-8], chloramphenicol [56-75-7], and acti-dion [66-81-9] were toxic to the fungal growth whereas streptomycin [57-92-1] and streptomycin-penicillin mixt. [8025-06-7] were of no effect. Griseofulvin checked fungal growth at concns. of 125 and 250 ppm, whereas fungal growth was highly decreased at 62.5 ppm. No sclerotia were produced in the presence of griseofulvin at all concns. Acti-dione gave the same effect on mycelial growth at 250 ppm, whereas chloramphenicol was very effective at both 125 and 250 ppm. Phenol [108-95-2] added to P.D.A. (potato dextrose agar) medium checked the mycelial growth at 800-1000 ppm and decreased sclerotial formation at 100 ppm, whereas no sclerotia were formed at 800-1000 ppm. Hydrogen peroxide decreased the rate of mycelial growth and sclerotial formation at concns. from 0.001-5%, whereas it checked mycelial growth and sclerotial formation at concns. of 10% and 15%. Crystal violet [548-62-9] showed highly significant effects on decreasing mycelial growth at concns. of 25 and 50 ppm, whereas it showed complete inhibition at 100 and 200 ppm. No sclerotia were produced at these concns. The fungus S. cepivorum was sensitive to all concns. of III and high concns. of calogran, whereas it was tolerant to all concns. of terraclor and low concns. of calogran. The rate of its mycelial growth and sclerotial formation after reinoculation was less than that of the untreated culture of the fungus. All concns. of III an and high concns. of calogran had a fungicidal effect, whereas terraclor at all concns. and calogran at low concns. had a fungistatic effect.
